δ Gerhard Richter (b.1932)Cage (P19-2)Diasec-mounted giclée print in colours, 2020, numbered from the edition of 200 on label affixed verso, published by HENI Editions, London, on aluminium composite panel, the full sheet printed to the edges, overall size 1000 x 1000mm (39 3/8 x 39 3/8in)Lot Essay:This work exquisitely renders the textural richness and brilliant colours of Gerhardt Richter's Cage-2, which currently hangs at the Tate Modern, London. Here, the monumental scale of the original 3m x 3m painting is concentrated into this striking giclée print, a process that results in the artwork's incredible clarity and intensity of colour. The lime green sings out between layers of varying pale greys and white: in every place that we look, new hues reveal themselves. The Cage series of works is named after the American composer, John Cage, whose music Richter listened to while creating the paintings in 2006. Inspired by the relinquishing of formality and control in Cage's music, Richter used a squeegee to scrape the paint across the canvas so that the outcome of each movement was not certain or a conscious decision. In this way, Richter sought to create works that emotively compel and envelope the viewer, and thus appeal to us on an intuitive level.δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
