Lord Aylesford was a pupil of the Oxford based artist John Baptist Malchair (1729-1812), who described Aylesford as one of the pupils whom he was most proud of; one of the etchings in this lot is after a drawing by Malchair himself. He is known `for having formed the finest collection of Rembrandt etchings which has ever been known` rather than `the excellence of his own plates`, but `at this period when exaggerated praise was generally given to the work of fashionable amateurs, it can only have been Lord Aylesford`s own modesty which caused his real excellence as an artist to be passed over without notice.` [A. P. Oppé]
