A fine and rare giant Victorian Carriage Clock by Charles Frodsham, 84 Strand, London, No.1007, with twin up-and-down dials, one calibrated with days of the week, the moulded gilt case with recessed top and handle shaped to accommodate the repeat button to one side, the enamel chapter ring signed above and marked `Clock Maker To The Queen` below, cruciform hands, all within an engraved gilt surround, the signed gong striking chain fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, well turned baluster pillars, reverse running silvered subsidiary seconds dial to backplate and ratchet tooth platform lever escapement with finely engraved cock, with rear dust shutter, 19.5cm high, with worn leather travelling case. See Allix (Charles) Carriage Clocks, p.271, plate IX/46 for a similar clock by this maker (No.1080) that Allix dates to `post 1854`. He also states that Frodsham was probably the only maker to incorporate up-and-down dials into his clocks, showing the state of wind of the barrel(s) Provenance: Presented to Sir Arthur Reid on his retirement in 1909 as Chief Judge of the Punjab Province, and thence by family descent
