PRIM JUAN: (1814-1870) Count of Reus. Spanish General and Statesman. President of the Ministers Council 1869-70. Assassinated. A.L.S., J. Prim, three pages, 8vo, n.p., Sunday 11th, n.y., to Mr. Layard, in French. On a letter with a blind embossed seal of the Ministry of War at the head, Prim states in part `…I do not think it will end up with a Peace result, because King William will be more demanding with the Republic than with a provisional government..´ further sending his condolences `I have been very sorry for the misfortune of the war frigate Captain!... The news of this terrible disgrace has deeply impressed the city of Madrid!!!´ Accompanied by the original envelope in Prim´s hand. Together with Juan Prim y Aguero (1858-1930) Spanish General, Count of Reus, son of Juan Prim. A.L.S., J. Prim, one page, 8vo, n.p. [Madrid], Wednesday, n.y. [1871], to Mr. Layard. Prim writes to his correspondent on a black border mourning letter with the family monogram at the heading, and states `Mother has kindly authorized us to go tomorrow and we will call on you at 4 o´clock in the carriage´. VG, 3 £100-150 Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) English Archaeologist, Politician and Diplomat. Best known as the excavator of Nimrud and Niniveh and for his discovery of the library of Ashurbanipal. Layard was appointed English envoy extraordinary to Madrid in 1869.
