Brass carriage clock, the case with Corinthian columns, rectangular enamelled dial, repeating movement striking on a gong (not working), 14cm, in a leather covered travelling case.Condition report:The clock is presently running, the escapement doesn't freely run. But the strike and repeat mechanisms work when the hands are turned past the hour and half hour. (The repeat operating on the button). The escapement is tarnished. The case is in very good condition. The leather case has wear, scuffing, and loss to the leather but is structurally sound, with replacement leather strap.

Charles Joseph, Paris for Vrard & Co., Shanghai, an engraved French Cannalée carriage clock, the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with the strike-work set on the movement backplate, with subsidiary alarm sounding on a bell set within the base, engraved to the backplate with the Chinese lettering, the inside of the plates stamped with the trademark Ch. Joseph, Paris, and numbered 689, 2473, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, blued-steel moon hands, a sweep seconds hand, subsidiary alarm dial and signed L. Vrard & Co., Shanghai, Hankrow, the Cannalée case with engraved floral decoration, height 17.5cm/15cm, handle up/down, with travelling box.Biography Charles P.H. Joseph, Rue Amelot 114, Paris, is recorded as showing carriage clocks at the Paris Exhibition of 1889 and 1900, where he was awarded a Gold Medal. Tardy gives him working dates from 1852 until 1935. It is known he worked as the horologist at the Paris Observatory.Charles Joseph, Paris (1738 - 1804), his father, travelled to Canton, China in 1784 and presumably set up trading links which were then carried on by his son.Notes: Alfred Chapuis, Laupe & de Sauisserie, p.31.

An Edward VII Silver Cased Carriage Timepiece and a Plated Cased Goliath Pocket Watch, the timepiece in case hallmarked by Henry Williamson Ltd, Birmingham 1901, with 1.75ins diameter white enamel dial with Roman numerals to the French movement, contained in plain case on bun feet, 3.75ins high, the Goliath pocket watch 3ins diameterThe small travel clock externally presents in good overall condition showing wear commensurate with age and moderate usage. The mechanism appears to be complete, the balance wheel is present. The watch sets, winds, attempts to run but does not and should therefore be regarded as untested. The dial is in need of a clean, it is very dusty but shows no obvious signs of severe damage or previous repair. The Goliath watch presents in condition commensurate with age and moderate usage. The plating is quite worn to the rear of the outer case. The glass is in good condition. The dial appears to be in good overall condition apart from one sign of repair at the 10 o'clock position approximately 10mm circular. The watch winds and sets but does not run. The balance wheel is present. Prospective bidders are strongly advised to study all images closely prior to bidding.
