WW2 German Kriegsmarine Other Ranks Deck Cap of German Battleship Scharnhorst Interest, fine example of the blue wool other ranks deck cap often referred to as a ‘Donald Duck’ cap. This example with its original metal eagle and cockade roundel insignia to the top and metallic wire cap tally for ‘Schlachtschiff Scharnhorst’. The interior has the original brown sweatband and blue cloth lining with Kiel tailors diamond to the centre. Overall a very good example. The German battleship Scharnhorst was one of the most famous ships of the Kriegsmarine. She was involved in many of the major naval engagements of the war and was often used as a propaganda tool for the Third Reich. She was eventually sunk during the Battle of the North Cape on 26th December 1943. Of her crew of 1,968 officers and men, only 36 men survived the sinking.

Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting. Titled: "Triple Beam" Dated: '90 Oil on Canvas. Signed and titled verso. Size: 61.5 x 49.25 in. (122 - 4340) In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Gus Grissom - Second U.S. Manned Space Flight" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Niue 25th Anniversary of the Moon Landing stamps issued July 20, 1994. On February 21, 1961, NASA announced that, of the seven astronaut-trainees of Project Mercury, three had been chosen to prepare for flight into space. Among them was 33-year-old military test pilot Captain Virgil "Gus" Grissom. So intent was Grissom on making the flight that he gave up water-skiing and became acutely observant of traffic laws to assure that nothing happened to make him ineligible. Finally, on July 21, 1961, only a few weeks after Alan Shepard's 15-minute suborbital flight in Freedom 7, it was Grissom's turn. He had named his Mercury 4 spacecraft Liberty Bell 7 because of its shape, even going so far as to paint a large crack on the vessel similar to the crack in the real Liberty Bell. At 8:20 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, a Redstone rocket blasted Mercury 4 off from Cape Canaveral. Grissom slightly exceeded the distance and speed of Shepard's earlier flight, traveling to an altitude of 118 miles at over 5,000 miles per hour. After splashdown, the spacecraft's escape hatch blew off prematurely. While Grissom escaped unharmed, Liberty Bell 7 sank permanently to the ocean floor. Jokingly, Grissom named his next spacecraft "Molly Brown" after the popular Broadway musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Reluctant NASA officials agreed to the name after hearing Grissom's back-up choice: "Titanic." Image Size: 7 x 6.25 in. Overall Size: 11.5 x 10.5 in. Unframed. (B14795)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Seashore Scene" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Postal Card for the U.S. 15c America the Beautiful, The Seashore, issue of June 17, 1989. At the seashore, water meets land in a marvelous collision of dynamic profusion. A good deal of the wonder and awe inspired by the seashore lies in the very fact that it is never static, always changing. Some elements of a beach may seem to remain the same. Fogs roll in, wrapping the shore in their misty blankets. Seagulls soar overhead, crying their rasping cries. And diminutive beach creatures scuttle to and fro, leaving tiny trails to be lapped up by the waves. But even these things vary, and each visit confronts the visitor with new discoveries, perhaps even unfamiliar terrains. Fickle tide pools come and go, sheltering strange sea creatures for a moment, then leaving with the next wave without even a goodbye. Winds play tag with the ever-shifting dunes, chasing them into closely huddled mounds, or hiding them under gently rolling slopes. Tides artfully sculpt the shoreline, adding sand to make the beach wider here, washing sand away to make it narrower there. All these changes make the seashore an intriguing place to visit, day after day, week after week, and year after year. Because each trip to the shore, be it the first or the fiftieth, can be experienced just once. To celebrate the wonders of the seashore, this postal card was issued at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, the United States' first National Seashore. Image Size: 15 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 20 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B11930)
