Lord Nelson....was led by false intelligence CASTLEREAGH LORD: (1769-1822) British Statesman, as Chief Secretary for Ireland Castlereagh was involved in putting down the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Later, as Foreign Secretary, he was central to the management of the coalition that defeated Napoleon. Castlereagh famously fought a duel with George Canning in 1809. A good A.L.S., Castlereagh, four pages, 4to, India Board, n.d. ('Tuesday', 1805), to Lord Melville ('My dear Lord'). Castlereagh sends his correspondent a sketch (no longer present), as best he can recall, of a speech he gave on Mr. Bond's motion and remarks 'I should be glad you would take the trouble of running it over and letting me know how far I am accurate in my facts. I wish you also to consider how far it is desirable at the present moment to publish anything, and whether this particular outline is likely to be of any use in correcting error and prejudice...' Castlereagh further reports on news of Horatio Nelson, 'We have letters from Lord Nelson dated the 12th off Antigua - the combined Fleet consisting of 18 sail left Martinique between the 4th & 6th, on the 8th they passed Antigua steering to the Northward on the 20th. They were seen in Lat 33.12 Long 58 W....returning of course to Europe - having left their troops at Martinique. Lord Nelson intended to sail on the 13th for Cape St Vincent. His Lordship was led by false intelligence to waste the interval between the 4th on which day he arrived at Barbados and the 12th in searching for the Enemy at Tobago and Trinidad. It now appears they never once steer'd from Martinique and that the only operation undertaken by this mighty armament was the redirection of Diamond Rock - had Nelson gone immediately off Martinique on his reaching Barbados he would probably have fallen in with them'. A letter of interesting content for its references to Nelson. Some light traces of former mounting to the right edge of the final page, only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature, otherwise VG Henry Dundas (1742-1811) 1st Viscount Melville. Scottish Politician, the first Secertary of State for War 1794-1801 and First Lord of the Admiralty 1804-05. Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805.

(30.5 x 129.5cm.), Completed in July 1899, this 1315 ton cargo ship was sold to the Italian firm of C. Saglimbene in 1912 and changed her name to San Giovanni. THE BUILDER’S ¼IN.: 1FT. SCALE HALF-BLOCK MODEL FOR THE LEGENDARY TEA CLIPPER THERMOPYLÆ, BUILT FOR G. THOMPSON & CO BY WALTER HOOD, ABERDEEN, 1868, carved from 5?8in. laminated yellow pine with black-painted topsides, rudder, carved warrior-form figurehead and cut-away masts, mounted on wooden display board with nameplate inscribed CHINA CLIPPER “THERMOPYLÆ” / ABERDEEN LINE, and brass builder’s plate engraved THERMOPYLÆ / 212 x 36 x 21. / 947 TONS. / WALTER HOOD & Co. / ABERDEEN / 1868 -- 10½ x 50½in. (26.5 x 128cm.), Provenance: Walter Hood & Co. Builders, and thence by descent. Thermopylæ was built in Walter Hood’s yards in Aberdeen in 1868, to the order of George Thompson & Co of London. Designed by Bernard Waymouth, she was 212 feet long and registered at 947 tons (net). A splendid sea boat, she was fast in any weather and especially quick at going to windward. Launched on 19th August 1868, she sailed from Gravesend on her maiden voyage to Melbourne on 7th November the same year. Anchoring in Port Phillip after a record run of 60 days (pilot to pilot), she went straight on to Newcastle, NSW, to load cargo for Shanghai. Crossing the Pacific in another record passage of 28 days, she then proceeded to Foochow to load tea. In the race home, she narrowly missed setting the record time for the year, and this first voyage set the standard for her entire career. Continuing to make extremely fast passages throughout the 1870s, she loaded her final tea cargo at Foochow in 1881, before being transferred to the Australian wool route. During the 1880s, she frequently raced her old tea-trade rival Cutty Sark from Sydney to London, via Cape Horn. Her best passage was 76 days in 1882, although Cutty Sark, who revelled in the stronger winds of the southern hemisphere, was generally quicker. In 1890 Thermopylæ was sold to Canadian owners for £5,000 and from 1892 to 1895 she was used in the trans Pacific trade. In 1896 she was resold to the Portuguese Government, renamed Pedro Nunes and put to work as a cadet training ship. Her condition deteriorated gradually and by 1907 her working life was over. On 13th October that year, she was towed out of the Tagus into the open sea and sunk by gunfire; it was a sad end for such a thoroughbred as she. Considered by many to have been the fastest clipper of them all, there were even those who believed her to be the fastest sailing vessel ever launched. Whatever the truth of the claims, she was - and has remained - one of the legends of the age of sail.
A BUILDER’S MODEL FOR THE STEAM SHIPS RUCKINGE & OTTINGE, BUILT BY WILLIAM GRAY & CO LTD FOR CONSTANTS (SOUTH WALES) LTD, 1939, the laminated and carved hull with white lined decks and hatches, lacquered wood bridge superstructure and replete with a combination of gilt and painted fittings, mounted on four turned wooden columns on moulded display base within original glazed mahogany case with ivorine builder’s plate. Cased measurements -- 18¾ x 51½ x 13in. (47.7 x 131 x 33cm.), These general purpose cargo ships displaced 2869 tons when launched in November 1939. The Ruckinge didn’t last long and was carrying food and general cargo between Lisbon and Oban when torpedoed by U108 on 19th December 1941 with the loss of six crew; the Ottinge survived the War to have a relatively normal career - was renamed Sofia (1955) and then Dias (1965). On 12th March 1967 she was in transit between Bremen and Civitavecchia with steel products when she caught fire sixty miles off Cape St. Vincent, exploded and sank with no loss of life. This lot will be available for viewing at Imperial Road,
