Africa. Spilhaus (Margeret Whiting), Pan-Africa, The Cape Times, Cape Town, 1944, a large lithographic pictorial map of the African continent, surmounted by a five-line quotation and facsimile signature of the South-African Premier, General Jan Smuts, varnished and toned overall, slight surface abrasion, 1060 x 825 mm, framedQTY: (1)NOTE:Margaret Whiting Spilhaus 's decorative pictorial map stresses the industry of the inhabitants and natural resources of the continent. She would produce five pictorial maps (Africa twice, Australia, North America and South America) with the idea of fostering and improving geographical and historical education, as well as generating international cooperation and world peace. Ambitions, no doubt encouraged by her upbringing in the Quaker boarding school in Sibford near Banbury in North Oxfordshire. Her parents emigrated to South Africa and she would eventually follow them in 1904. She settled in South Africa and would produce and illustrate nine books, primarily for children as well as her maps. She lived until 1981, dying at the age of 91, leaving a legacy of vibrancy and vitality to the teaching of geography and history. She lived by a principle, that is encapsulated in her own words "Waterloo may have been won on the playing fields of Eton, but the effect of teaching geography and history intelligently and in correlation in the schoolroom would be far-reaching and would contribute substantially to the avoidance of Waterloos in the future".

STATUE D'ATLAS SOUS FORME D'HERCULE EN SCHISTE GRISANCIENNE RÉGION DU GANDHARA, II/IIIE SIÈCLE 51 cm (20 1/8 in.) high Footnotes:A SCHIST ATLAS FIGURE IN THE FORM OF HERCULES ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 2ND/3RD CENTURY 犍陀羅 二/三世紀 片岩赫拉克利斯形象之阿特拉斯像 Published: Mario Bussagli, L'Arte del Gandhara, Torino, 1984, p. 55. Isao Kurita, Gandharan Art, Vol. II, Tokyo, 1990, p. 155, fig. 448. Provenance: With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s Fewer subjects convey the intriguing Greco-Roman legacy in ancient Gandhara (modern-day Pakistan and Afghanistan) more clearly than such Atlas figures lining the bases of its Buddhist stupas. Epitomized by this superlative example, the bearded face, dramatic expression, athleticism, and male nudity nod unmistakably to Classical aesthetic ideals. In Greek mythology, Atlas fought on the side of the Titans against the Olympian gods, lost, and was condemned to support the spherical vault of the heavens for eternity. His myth inspired a leitmotif in Greek and Roman architecture of figures upholding architectural superstructures. During a period of heightened contact with the Mediterranean world, the figure of Atlas was adopted in Gandhara. Repeated images of composite Atlas-like figures surrounded the base of stupas, whose solid domes can be understood as symbols for the sky. With the skin of the Nemean lion worn as a cape over his head and shoulders, the imagery of this distinctive Atlas is conflated with that of Hercules. Hercules conquered the beast as the first of his Twelve Labors, and also briefly relieved Atlas of his duties during his penultimate Labor. While the subject of Hercules is represented in other forms of Gandharan material culture, such as a wrestler's weight now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1994.112), the only other known large stone Atlas in the form of Hercules is in the Cleveland Museum of Art (fig. 1). In comparison, the present example alludes more directly to the hero's depiction in Classical art, as the modelling of his high cheek bones, thick beard, and searching gaze draws remarkable resemblance to a monumental head of Hercules from Pergamon (fig. 2), a likeness that was also observed by Ingholt about an Atlas figurine with a similar countenance (Ingholt, Gandharan Art in Pakistan, 1951, p. 157, no. 387). In the Gandharan context, surviving Atlas figures sculpted from stucco line stupa bases at the sites of Taxila, Hadda, and Jualian. There is a considerable number of small stone panels and figurines, yet only a few large stone Atlas sculptures are broadly-known, and originate from two dispersed sets. The first set consists of three figures of smaller scale (each approx. 40 cm high) carved in a dark grey, almost black schist, comprising the aforementioned Cleveland Herculean Atlas, an Atlas in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena (F.1975.17.17.S), and another sold by Bonhams, New York, 17 March 2014, lot 66. Atlas figures from the second set survive as a pair carved in a lighter grey schist, consisting of the present sculpture and its mate in the Peshawar Museum (Kurita, Gandharan Art, Vol. II, 1990, p. 157, fig. 453). This second pair is larger, more expressive, and better carved—truer to the Classical aesthetics of naturalism—making the de Marteau Atlas one of the two most important Gandharan Atlas figures remaining. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

(Ian Fleming, James Bond, You Only Live Twice), A rare Ian Fleming James Bond poster for the novel 'You Only Live Twice', first published Jonathan Cape Ltd, 1964, the poster presumably a promotional item produced for the launch of the book, approx size 75.5 x 50cm, on board, with the author's surname in block capitals at head of poster in the iconic 'Tea Chest' stencil typeface, first used with such stunning effect on the 'From Russia with Love' dust jacket, where the beautiful and classic Trompe L'oeil illustration by Richard Chopping is in stark contrast to the rough boldness of Tea Chest, thereafter becoming part of the house style in the Jonathan Cape UK first editions of the vast majority of Bond novels, including the Chopping designed dust jacket of 'You Only Live Twice'. The title of the book in English and Japanese characters vertically descending on the right hand side of the poster, the main image of the poster a montage consisting of a photographic portrait of a Japanese lady (presumably the main female character in the novel, "Kissy Suzuki"), a Chrysanthemum flower, an iconic Walther PPK pistol, and a toad sitting on a torn out newspaper obituary for Commander James Bond, and the text "Jonathan Cape 16s" to lower right. The toad and the pink chrysanthemum also echo the Richard Chopping designed dust jacket for the novel. You Only Live Twice was published in the UK on 16 March 1964, by Jonathan Cape and cost sixteen shillings. There were 62,000 pre-orders for the book, a significant increase over the 42,000 advance orders for the hardback first edition of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Some wear to extremities and corners, slight toning and light waterstaining to the "L" & "E" of "FLEMING" at head of poster, corner mounted in a modern box frame. A very scarce Ian Fleming James Bond item

Waugh (Evelyn) They Were Still Dancing, first American edition, original cloth, light surface soiling to spine, dust-jacket, light toning to spine, a few short closed tears with creasing to head of spine and joints, some light surface soiling, but overall a sharp and excellent example of a rare jacket, 8vo, New York, Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, 1931.⁂ An excellent example of the first American edition of Remote People, rare in this or any condition.Waugh fell out with Cape & Smith after they reneged on their agreed advance of $600, based on the poor sales of Labels (published in the U.S. as A Bachelor Abroad). Incensed, Waugh broke off relations with Cape & Smith and took They Were Still Dancing to Farrer & Rinehart. The print run had already taken place however, therefore the preliminaries of the Farrer & Rinehart edition had to be published as cancels, and the cloth binding still carried the Cape & Smith logo. Vanhöfen, Jan -- "Mingo Junction # 2277"; "Michigan Central Station # 436", from the series "Disturbia" - Detroit. 2012/ 2013/printed 2014. 2 chromogenic prints on Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper. Each circa 39,5 x 49,5 cm (36 x 46 cm). Signed and dated by the photographer in ink on the verso. From an edition by Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg e.V.Jörn Vanhöfen's photographs address the absence of man, or his withdrawal from places that have become too inhospitable to live in. For the series "Aftermath", Vanhöfen photographed places around the world that have become self-destructing as a result of their maximum exploitation by the expansion society. Sober and at the same time apocalyptic, the individual photographs combine construction and environmental sins into an overall picture. In places as diverse as Bangkok, Cape Town, Chicago, Berlin and Duisburg, the dark sides of progress can be found, which the photographer tracks down and captures in monumental tableaus. One of his later series, "Disturbia", is dedicated to Detroit, which for decades was a symbol of the upswing brought about by the American auto industry. Due to the many empty houses, entire neighborhoods have become ghost towns, and is now one of the most dangerous cities in the USA. – In excellent condition.
