'First and finest edition of the earliest expedition made by a white man in this direction' (Sabin). 'One of the most important Canadian books' (Hill). In the first expedition of 1789 Mackenzie set out from Fort Chippewayan, accompanied by Canadians and Indians in birchbark canoes, to explore the uncharted north-west region with a view to discovering a navigable North-West Passage. Although he reached the Arctic sea via the Mackenzie River he determined it not to be a viable passage. In the second expedition of 1792-3 Mackenzie successfully reached the Pacific Ocean, at Cape Menzies, becoming the first white man to cross the Rocky Mountains. His explorations were hugely beneficial to British trade in North America and laid the basis for future Arctic expeditions, his account much impressing Sir John Franklin in his later explorations with his accuracy. Provenance: Library of Colin and Joan Deacon.
