Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Rhode Island" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Masonite painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. Rhode Island. One of the fastest ships of her day, the U.S.S. Rhode Island - a side-wheel steamer - was commissioned by the Union Navy on 29 July 1861 with Commander Stephen D. Trenchard in command. She first served as a supply and paymaster ship, but the U.S.S. Rhode Island's speed enabled her to capture several Confederate schooners while performing these duties. Thus, as one of the few Union cruisers swift enough to overtake the Confederate blockade runners, the U.S.S. Rhode Island was re-assigned to the Gulf Blockading Squadron on 17 April 1862. She chased and forced ashore the British schooner Richard O'Bryan on 4 July 1862. Later, she was called north for her next duties which involved towing the revolutionary ironclad U.S.S. Monitor from Hampton Roads to Beaufort, North Carolina. On 29 December 1862, with the famous U.S.S. Monitor in tow, she departed Hampton Roads. As the ships rounded the treacherous Cape Hatteras on the evening of 30 December 1862, they encountered a typically heavy winter storm. The violent weather and heavy seas were too much for the U.S.S. Monitor's pumps; she began to flood. As the ironclad began to sink the U.S.S. Rhode Island's crew valiantly tried to rescue their fellow seamen from the ironclad. Only four of the U.S.S. Monitor's officers and twelve of her enlisted men were lost. Image Size: 13.5 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B09950)
Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "Golden Hinde" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. On December 13, 1577, in a boat less than the size of a small modern tug, Francis Drake set sail from England on a daring three-year odyssey that would take him into oceans hitherto explored only by the Spanish. Drake and about 160 men ventured forth in five vessels: the Pelican (which he later renamed the Golden Hinde), the Elizabeth, the Marigold, and the supply ships Swan and Benedict. Of the five, only the Golden Hinde, with a crew of about 50, completed the voyage. After passing safely through violent storms in the Strait of Magellan, Drake raided Spanish settlements along the west coast of South America. Drake captured two vessels with cargoes of gold, silver and jewels that were so heavy, they caused the Golden Hinde to sail below her watermark. Continuing northward, Drake sighted what is now Canada's west coast. But bitter cold forced him to turn back, and he set a course south and westward to the Philippines and Molucca (the Spice Islands), where he negotiated a trade treaty with the local sultan. From Java to Sierra Leone on the Cape of Good Hope -- 9,700 miles -- Drake sailed without a port of call or a stop for maintenance. On his return to England in September of 1580, he was greeted as a national hero. Queen Elizabeth I came on board his ship to dub him Sir Francis Drake. His fortune and reputation as a brilliant navigator were made -- and the way was opened to England to become a global superpower. Image Size: 15 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 16.5 x 14.5 in. Unframed. Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "U.S.C.G. Fisheries Patrol Vessel Cape Corwin" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Fisheries Patrol Vessel Cape Corwin stamp issued September 25, 1995. One of the most important peacetime duties of the United States Coast Guard is enforcing American fishing rights. Working to uphold the Fisheries Management and Conservation Act -- which governs fishing activities within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States -- the U.S. Coast Guard Fisheries Patrol Vessel Cape Corwin visited the Republic of the Marshall Islands in early 1990, just before the craft was decommissioned. Once a United Nations Trust Territory administered by the United States, the Marshalls have hosted a number of craft from this branch of America's military. Image Size: 16.5 x 24 in. Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting. Titled: "Another Analysis" Dated: '96. Oil on Canvas. Signed verso. Overall Size: 25 x 46 in. (369 - 1303) In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia.
