He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Sandhurst; entered the Northumberland Fusiliers 18 Jan. 1902, and became Lieutenant, Indian Army, 10 May 1904; Captain, 18 Jan. 1911; was Adjutant, Royal Flying Corps, 12 Aug. to 31 Nov. 1915, was promoted to Major, Indian Army, 18 Jan. 1917. [London Gazette, 3 July, 1915]: "Anthony Marshall, Capt., 28th Light Cavalry, Indian Army, attached Royal Flying Corps. When on flying reconnaissance over the neighbourhood of Staden on 7 June, 1915, Capt. Borton was wounded in the head and neck by a bullet fired from a hostile aeroplane, and although suffering severely from loss of blood he continued, with the assistance of the Observer, Capt. Marshall, to bandage his wounds, and completed the reconnaissance on the prescribed course. His injuries are such that he is not yet out of danger. Capt. Marshall continued his observations after rendering all possible aid to the Pilot, who was gradually losing consciousness, not withstanding that the German aeroplane was persistently attacking. Athi-Patra Ruga (South African, b. 1984). Wool and thread on tapestry canvas titled "Lizalis Indinga Lakho/Autistik Imperium (Manifest Destiny/Autistic Empire)" depicting four figures surrounded by cheetahs, a blue crane, and tropical plants, 2017. Signed along the left edge along the verso.Provenance: The artist via WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa; Private Minnesota Collection.Exhibition: WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery, “Queens in Exile 2014–2017," 2017.Lot Essay:Athi-Patra Ruga often explores themes of gender, sexuality, culture, and ideology in his multi-media works. Themes of sexuality, HIV/AIDS, African culture, and queerness in post-apartheid South Africa are recurrent in his works. They often raise questions about public spaces, the body in relation to these spaces, and what is "normal."The present work was the headliner for his "Queens in Exile 2014-2017" show exhibited at WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery in 2017. The work was featured in ArtForum in March 2018. The tapestry is based on a cartoon drawn by Ruga and was collaboratively embroidered by the artist and three assistants. Seated on a peacock chair, referencing a 1967 photo of Huey P. Newton, is Her Majesty the Versatile Queen Ivy. Her face is based on the only photo Ruga possesses of his maternal grandmother, Nompuku Millie Ngalonkulu. In her head is the decapitated head of The Elder, a character from earlier exhibitions of Ruga's. On bent knees in front of this character is a comic book mummy, the Walking Wound, a recurring motif representing corporeal trauma.Height: 16 ft 5 in x width: 13 ft 2 in.

AFTER LOUIS-AUGUSTE DE SAINSON (FRENCH 1801-1887) A PAIR OF VIEWS OF TONGA-TABOU, POLYNESIA with blind stamphand coloured lithographs, c.1830-1835, published by Antoine-Joseph Langlumé, from Voyage de la Corvette L'Astrolabeeach 30.7 x 40.9cm each 54.2 x 64.3cm (framed)(2)Property from a London CollectionThe Astrolabe was named after the eponymous expeditionary vessel that had been wrecked off the Solomon Islands in the spring of 1788 under the command of Jean-François de Galaup, Comte de Lapérouse (1741-c.1788). First christened Coquille, under which name it sailed from France in 1822 to circumnavigate the globe under the command of Louis-Isidore Duperrey (1786-1865), it was captained by Dumont d'Urville and sailed in 1826 to visit New Zealand and the Pacific Islands on a fact finding mission, including to discover the true fate of Lapérouse's earlier voyage. The expedition stopped at the Cape of Good Hope, passed through Bass Strait visiting Port Phillip, and arriving at Sydney on 1 December 1828. Sailing on to New Zealand in January 1827 it arrived in Tonga in the spring and explored the Fiji Archipelago, New Britain and New Guinea. In November, after a stop at Amboina, it sailed up the north-west coast of Australia, reaching Tasmania. Returning via the Cape of Good Hope it docked in Marseille on 25 March 1829. The Astrolabe subsequently embarked on a further voyage, this time to the South Pole, in 1837. The story and findings of the 1826-29 expedition of the Astrolabe were published in eighteen volumes under the authorship of Dumont d'Urville as Voyage de la Corvette L'Astrolabe in the early 1830s. offered for sale without reserve

LINCOLN (ABRAHAM)Autograph note signed ('A. Lincoln') on a small card, giving permission for Mr Kilgore and friend to visit USS Monitor ('I think the Sec. of Navy might allow Hon. Mr Kilgore & his friend to visit the Monitor'), mounted in a card wallet bearing collection label '203', one page, mounted on card using photo corners, 12mo (48 x 80mm.), [n.p. but Washington], 4 November 1862Footnotes:'TO VISIT THE MONITOR': ABRAHAM LINCOLN GIVES PERMISSION TO VISIT HIS IRONCLAD WARSHIP DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR.The USS Monitor was built at the behest of Abraham Lincoln for the US Navy during the American Civil War in response to the Confederates' own ironclad Virginia. The Union had blockaded the port of Hampton Roads and it was feared the Virginia would be able to break through. Under commanding officer Lieutenant John Lorimer Worden, the Monitor famously encountered the Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862, the first battle fought between armoured warships. It was deemed to be a draw, but the encounter ensured that '...the worldwide strategies of naval warfare and shipbuilding were changed forever...' (Monitor National Marine Sanctuary website). The Virginia was to be destroyed by its own commander in May that year in order to prevent it falling into Union hands. Distinguished by its revolving 'Ericsson' turret (named after the designer John Ericsson), the Monitor was completed in early 1862 and the design established the blueprint for the Monitor class of warship built for the American Navy for decades to come. At the time of our note, the Monitor was in dry dock at the Washington Navy Yard for repairs, where it had been greeted by thousands of cheering admirers. A welcome ceremony in October was attended by Lincoln and many distinguished guests and the ship became rather a tourist attraction, the victim of souvenir hunters who, it is reported, stripped it bare. By November, however, it was fully repaired and ready to return to service. Its triumphant return was to be short lived. On the last day of the year, the Monitor foundered while under tow during a storm off Cape Hatteras, its wreck lying undiscovered until 1973.Provenance: Private European collection formed by the owner's father some 50 years ago; purchased from Studio Albertino Mussato (bookseller's catalogue description inside presentation folder). This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

• TREVOR BELL (BRITISH 1930-2017) Trevor Bell (lots 111-122) One of the most important painters working anywhere today is Trevor Bell, and Bell’s first experiments in what we now call shaped canvases began in the late fifties. Patrick Heron, 1970IntroductionBell grew up in Leeds, where he studied at the College of Art (1947-1952) before teaching at Harrogate College of Art. In Leeds he met Terry Frost who was up from St Ives benefiting from a Gregory Fellowship at the university. On Frost's advice Bell and his wife moved to Cornwall in 1955. There Bell became a leading member of the younger generation of St Ives artists, exhibiting with the Penwith Society of Arts from 1956. Used to painting the grimey north of England, Bell responded with vigour and alacrity to the colour and light of his new surroundings capturing the atmosphere of the sea, coast and landscape of the south west in his distinctive and developing abstraction. An early mentor in St Ives for Bell was Ben Nicholson who encouraged him to show in London. Another there who admired his youthful painterly zest was Patrick Heron. Bell's first one man show at Waddington Galleries on Cork Street in 1958 was a sell out success. In the catalogue Heron described him as 'The best non-figurative painter under thirty'. The same year Bell was awarded an Italian government sponsorship; in 1959 he won one of six main painting prizes at the first Paris International Biennale of Young Artists and in 1960 he was awarded a Gregory Fellowship by Leeds University, and moved back north. During the following decade Bell enjoyed considerable commercial success both in the UK and abroad, including a succession of exhibitions at Waddington Galleries (1960, 1962 & 1964). It was during this period that he developed his interest in shaped canvases and the Tate Gallery purchased their first work by him. The decade culminated in a hugely successful show at the Richard Demarco Gallery in Edinburgh which toured to Northern Ireland and the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield. In the autumn of 1973 the Whitechapel Art Gallery mounted an exhibition of his recent paintings, and the following year he showed at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington DC. In 1976 Bell moved to Florida to take up the post of Professor for Master Painting at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Availed of a warehouse-sized studio and with time to really develop his painting he produced large-scale, intensely coloured works, reflecting the influence of the climate and landscape on him. A source of inspiration too were the rockets launched from Cape Canaveral, the first he saw being the night time launch of Apollo 17 in December 1972. This and subsequent rocket shots had a lasting influence on his work. Over the 20 years he spent in America exhibitions of his work were mounted at the Academy of Sciences in Washington, the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center, Miami, The Cummer Gallery, Jacksonville and the Museum of Art at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1985 Bell was included in the the Tate Gallery's exhibition on St Ives 1939-64: Twenty-five years of Painting, Sculpture and Pottery and his work was featured in the Tate St Ives' inaugural show in 1993. Retiring from his Florida teaching post in 1996, he returned to Cornwall, setting up studios near Penzance. He was the subject of a full retrospective of his work at Tate St Ives in 2004 and in 2011 a further fourteen works were acquired by the Tate Gallery for their permanent collection. In the UK other examples of his work are in collections of The Arts Council of England, the British Council, the British Museum, Laing Art Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum.111TREVOR BELL (BRITISH 1930-2017)CENTRE GREENsigned and dated BELL 1961 lower left; signed, titled twice, inscribed and dated Centre Green / CENTRE GREEN / by / Trevor Bell 1961 / crayon on the reversecrayon and watercolour on thick paper53.5 x 42.5cm; 21 1/4 x 17in72.5 x 61cm; 28 1/2 x 24in (framed)

FLEMING, Ian, The James Bond novels. A complete set of 14 facsimile first editions, The First Edition Library, Shelton, Connecticut, circa 1988-93. The publishers went to very considerable trouble to duplicate the bindings, text and dust jackets of the original Jonathan Cape first editions. The book size, weight, typeface, endpapers, texture and finish of the bindings, as well as the Richard Chopping dust wrappers, were all exactly reproduced. As an example of the extraordinary detail and care taken, the jacket on Casino Royale is the first state jacket without the Sunday Times review on the front inner flap; Live and Let Die has no credit to the artist Kenneth Lewis on the front inner flap, as found on the first state jacket; Moonraker has the rare misprint 'shoo' for 'shoot' on page 10, second line from the bottom; and The Man with the Golden Gun has the rare first state variant of the golden gun on the front cover of the binding. This proved too expensive and later issues do not have this. All books are in slip cases with the front and back panels of the dust jackets reproduced on the slip cases. A fine set with no inscriptions (14) (box).
