South Africa – Sir John Jackson fine album of approx 130 photos compiled by the family of Sir John Jackson when he was working on the docks at Simon`s Town Cape Colony South Africa. The album contains good photographs of street scenes coastal views the harbour etc and a photo postcard of picket boats at Simon`s Town Regatta in 1904. Some of these are panoramas which is quite unusual for the time. There are also photographs showing members of the Jackson family fishing and sailing in Scotland in 1902 and playing hockey at Tynemouth in 1904 and some images of Hugh Jackson as an officer in India with pictures of his camp mess tent etc.
[Bache, Alexander Dallas]. Sketches Accompanying the Annual Report of the Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, 1851 (32nd Congress, 2nd Session). Original blind-stamped brown cloth (rebacked), containing fifty-eight charts and sketches (as listed), some folding, including the approaches to the city of Savannah, Key West harbour, the Mississippi delta, Mobile bay, Galveston bay, San Francisco bay, San Diego bay, the mouth of the Columbia river and Cape Hancock, and others, quarto. Note: Association copy, the front pastedown with applied slip `With the compliments of A.D. Bache`. Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was an American physicist, scientist and surveyor who erected a number of coastal fortifications, including Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1843 he succeeded Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler as Superintendent of the United States coast survey.

JOHN PAUL II: (1978-2005) Pope of the Catholic Church 1978-2005. Book signed, a hardback edition of Crossing the Threshold of Hope, First Edition published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1994. Signed (`Johannes Paulus II`) in blue ink to the title page and dated 17th January 1995 in his hand. Accompanied by the dust jacket. Rare in this form. VG The signature was obtained personally by the vendor in Papua New Guinea on 17th January 1995 when the Pope performed the beatification of Blessed Peter ToRot (1912-1945). Accompanied by a colour printed brochure entitled Blessed Peter ToRot-A Martyr of the Church.
GENTHE ARNOLD: (1869-1942) German-born American Photographer, famous for his portraits of eminent personalities and San Francisco. A.L.S., Arnold Genthe, one page, 8vo, New York, n.d. (`Sunday`), to Arta. Genthe informs his correspondent that `Things are very uncertain with me, and I do not know if I will be able to get away for a little vaccation. (sic) But it is not quite impossible that I may visibly appear somewhere new Cape Cod in August. Quien Sabe?` He continues `For John Cooper Powys I have the greatest admiration. He is one of the truly civilized men of our time.` and in concluding remarks `I, never having been married, have not yet gotten a divorce.` Scarce. VG
EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January-December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. Vintage signed 4.5 x 3.5 photograph, the image depicting the Prince of Wales standing in a three quarter length pose, wearing a pith helmet and short sleeve shirt, on the deck of a boat. Signed (`Edward P`) in dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image and dated Nigeria, 1925 in his hand. A second date, in an unidentified hand, of Lagos, 22nd April 1925, appears to the verso. Accompanied by the original envelope addressed to Mrs. A. Burt in London and postally cancelled at Cape Town, 1st May 1925. Signed Commemorative cover honouring man`s third flight to the moon with Apollo XI and featuring portraits of the three crew members, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. A US postage stamp commemorating Apollo 8 is affixed to the cover and postally cancelled at Cape Canaveral, 16th July 1969, the date of the historic Apollo XI launch.
