HORSBURGH, JAMES. Horsburgh's East India Pilot. Printed for Black, Parbury, & Allen, Booksellers to the Honorable East India Company, 1817. Large folio, stitched into original sail-cloth covers. 25 hinged engraved maps and charts, mostly folding or double page, dating between 1806-1821. Printed title listing the maps: Whittle & Laurie's English Channel 1-4, Captain Horsburgh's North Atlantic Ocean 5, South ditto 6, Gough's Island and Bird Islands 7, Indian Ocean 8, Cape of Good Hope 9 to 10, Arabian Sea 11, Hindoostan 12, Bombay Harbour 13, Goa River and Murmagoa Road 14, Maldiva Islands 15, Peninsula beyond the Ganges 16, Straits of Malacca 17 to 19, China Sea 20 to 21, Luzon and Formosa 22. With a further four unlisted and unnumbered charts: Islands and Channels at the Southwest Extremity of the China Sea; Strait of Sunda; Chart [of Chinese waters etc.] Intended as an Accompaniment to the Book of Directions for navigating to, from and in the East Indies (small repair) and chart dedicated to various sea captains at Canton in 1818. Apart from a few short tears, mostly at lower margins, occasional very light spotting and a few creases, in very good condition. With a one page "Memoranda from Horsburgh's East India Pilot" loosely inserted. Manuscript, probably in the same hand as lot 1002, that of Henry Kent. Folio. With comments on reefs, depths, weather conditions etc. And a torn and defective manuscript chart of an area with Penetenguishene Harbour at centre. (3)

A rare Meissen figure of a nun, circa 1743, modelled by J.J.Kandler and J.F.Eberlein, seated on a rocky mound reading from the Bible, the open page inscribed "Der 65 Psalm/ vers 2/ Gott man lobet/ dich in der Stille/ zu Zion und dir/ bezahlet man/ Gelubte", the binding finely decorated in shades of brown and with formal gilt foliate decoration, her cape painted with iron-red stars, wearing a white habit over a black cowl, the base finely painted with rockwork, traces of crossed swords mark in blue, 13.5cm, 5 1/4in, right little finger restored. Kandler's Taxa of 1740-48 records: 1 Nonne auf einem Felsen sizend und betend mit beyden Handen ein Buch haltend, vor die Aebti§in von Herfordt, 3 Thlr. [1 nun seated on rockwork holding a book with both hands and praying, for the Abbess of Herfordt]. Eberlein records in November 1743: 1 Nonne nachgeholfen, zum abgie§en zerschnitten [assisted with 1 nun, cut for moulding]; both quoted by R.Ruckert, Meissener Porzellan, p.181, no.976. A similar example inscribed with the same verse is in the Bavarian National Museum (Ruckert, op.cit.), and another was sold by Sotheby's Zurich, 5th December 1991, lot 200.

A VIRTUALLY UNUSED W.W.GREENER 'LIGHT HARPOON GUN', serial no. 582, full cased outfit consisting of Geener 'GP' martini-action harpoon gun with 20in. take-down barrel (fires .38 special blank (14.5GRs No.5 Cordite)), hard chrome finish, 14 1/2in. stock including buttplate, three 16oz. stainless steel harpoons with arrowhead tips and two spreading barbs, two line release frames (with lines), two cleaning rods, three shooting lines, one tin container for two boxes 50 Greener harpoon gun blanks (boxes present, no blanks) cleaning equipment and original tin of oil, with extra harpoon, in its wood case. The gun was completed in 1963 and was purchased by the Vendor from new to assess the market for shark hunting off the shores of the Cape in South Africa (known as the home of the Great White). Having arranged a boat and a bevy of potential clients to demonstrate the gun to, the disappointment of a complete no show on the shark front was considerable. After loosing a single harpoon at a passing fish as a compensatory gesture - but missing (being the first time the gun had been fired) the gun and its accoutrements were consigned to a local bar as a conversation piece (where it has remained until the present day). Please note that VAT at 17.5% plus Duty at 3.2% is applicable to this Lot.
