Magnificently bound copy in full dark red leather with wide foliate margins on covers with central large foliate design. Spine with ruled bands to separate 4 vignettes of a horse, sea bird, snake and sailing ship, red and black title labels, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. Note when this book was exquisitely bound some 70 to 80 years ago it was slightly trimmed to accommodate the gilt edges etc, lacks publisher`s advertisement at the end of the book. An object lesson in the bookbinder`s art, folds to some plates reinforced. Comments: (1)

Baker, Sergeant F. ATHE ANGLO-BOER WAR KEEPSAKES OF SERGEANT F. A. BAKER WORCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT 1899-1902The Collection comprises of the following: Pair of Anglo-Boer War Medals: Queen`s South Africa Medal 2 clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State and King`s South Africa Medal: 2 clasps South Africa 1901; South Africa 1902. Both medals officially impressed "3710 Serjit F Baker Worcester Regt." (EF) medal ribbons need replacing ? Finely carved riding crop - the top terminates in the shape of a horse`s head. Baker obviously purchased this from the Boer Prisoner of War who had carved it. Baker added two silver rings to the top and middle of the crop engraved with his initials `F.A.B.`. The top portion of the wooden handle of the crop has a barley twist design with the carved legend "J.P. P. O. W. Boer Camp Ceylon 1900-1902". There is a possibility that Baker spent part of his war service guarding Boer Prisoners of War in Ceylon, length 70cm ? Birmingham 1901 silver vesta case with Baker`s initials engraved `F.A.B.` ? Amber cheroot holder 9ct gold 1906 mouthpiece contained in a Birmingham 1905 hinged tapering case with loop at the bottom end ? Collapsible hinged campaign spoon (white metal) ? A `Waterman`s Ideal Fountain Pen` completely enveloped with a fretted engraved silver design fitted over the body of the pen with Baker`s engraved initials `F.A.B.`. In original titled card box by L. G. Sloan Ltd, The Pen Corner, Kingsway, London WC2 complete with instruction pamphlet and empty glass ink phail. ()

The book has been re-cased with a new leather spine Comments: Lieut. James Henry Butt served in the Royal Navy as an officer from 1863 to 1873 rising to the rank of Commander, most of his service being on H.M.S. Sylvia. The beautifully executed watercolours depict Butt`s service in Hong Kong and Japan. The first sketch is an excellent view of Cape Town from Table Bay, obviously painted by Butt while enroute to the Far East. The title page records that Butt presented the collection of sketches to A. H. Phillpotts Esq. Views include Formosa, Canton, Foo-chow, Amoy, Nankin, Kigatsu Hirado, Nagasaki, Yedo and Simoda. (1)
