JERVIS JOHN: (1735-1823) 1st Earl of St Vincent. British Admiral of the Fleet remembered for his victory at the Battle of Saint Cape Vincent (1797) and as a patron of Horatio Nelson. A.L.S., St Vincent, two pages, 4to, Ville de Paris, Torbay, 27th May 1800, to a lady. St Vincent informs his correspondent that her letter has only just reached him from Portsmouth and `I take the earliest opportunity to return my best thanks for the memorial of your late worthy Father….which I have a pride in wearing.` The Admiral continues `I was fully aware of the situation I plac`d your son in, & imparted as much of it, as was proper to him, but I had hop`d the ship serving under the eye of Lord Nelson would have produced a change and I also expected Lord Nelson would take care of my young friend for preserving the honour of his Son in Law.` In concluding he writes `The Thalia is expected soon in England, where her state of repair will compel her to come, this summer, and when she arrives, I will do all in my power to promote the interests of Mr. Colquitt…` Some traces of former mounting to the left edge of the first page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG
KING RICHARD: (1774-1834) English Vice Admiral during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, Captain of HMS Achilles at the Battle of Trafalgar, where he fought with distinction despite being one of the youngest Captains present. A.L.S., Richard King, three pages, 4to, HMS Sirius, off Cape, 13th December 1800, to Tucker in Torbay. King announces `I have at last Broken the Ice by capturing a Spanish Frig….bound to Monte Video, I fear not very valuable, but I was to [sic] impatient, otherwise it would have been better to have taken Her when homeward bound-had I been 20 minutes later she would have escaped, we were only 2 miles from the shore-and the weather came on very thick-I had almost despaired of taking anything, to be sure I have her over a good deal of ground (between ourselves)` and further comments on the general situation regarding Spanish frigates, `I think we are equal to two Spanish Frigates in the lines, but I fear this will not give us an opportunity to try our skill`, and also adding that he has plenty of provisions and that the crew are in good health. In a postscript King remarks `One of the Spanish prisoners informs me there are two frigates ready….and that there are 5 lines of Battle Ships there, but are in want of Men and Provisions.` With integral address leaf with remnants of a red wax seal and an area of paper loss where the seal was originally broken, causing a little loss of text. G HMS Sirius was a 36-gun fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy. Between 1797 and 1805, the Sirius was engaged in maintaining the blockade of Napoleonic Europe. On 11th December 1800 Sirius captured the Spanish merchant brig Melchora, some three miles off Sifarga. The brig was 24 hours out of A Coruña, on her way to Montevideo, as the present letter confirms. Captain King reported the capture in order to draw attention to the fact that she was the only vessel to have left A Coruña since August.
GRAVINA Y NAPOLI FEDERICO CARLOS: (1756-1806) Spanish Admiral during the American Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. Died of wounds sustained during the Battle of Trafalgar. A.L.S., Federico Gravina, one page, 4to, Cadiz, 14th February 1805, to Your Excellency, in French. Gravina informs his correspondent that he went to the arsenal yesterday to begin the preparation of the fleet, commenting `I found everything very well organised, and I hope that the 12 ships will be ready next month. The only difficulty I can foresee would be in getting together enough sailors for a full crew, and in having sufficient victuals and biscuits, but we shall do the best we can.` VG When Napoleon proposed to invade Great Britain Gravina was placed under the command of French Admiral Villeneuve, who took the Franco-Spanish fleet into Caribbean waters to confuse the English fleet. The objective was to allow the crossing of the English Channel by 180,000 men that Napoleon had waiting around Boulogne. The deception did not have desired effect. On its return the Franco-Spanish fleet was intercepted by a fleet under Sir Robert Calder at the Battle of Cape Finisterre, losing the Spanish ships Firme and San Rafael. After this they took refuge in Cadiz by order of Villeneuve, contradicting the original plan of Napoleon. In Cadiz relations between the supposed allies were poor. Gravina and other Spanish commanders argued strongly with the French, who wanted to sail immediately, whereas the Spaniards recommended waiting for a more favourable conditions. Gravina was also concerned, as the present letter illustrates, about the yellow fever epidemic that had left his ships short of men, as well as the lingering resentment against the French, for their perceived lack of support at the Battle of Cape Finisterre. The fleet finally left Cadiz on 20th October 1805, leading to the Battle of Trafalgar the next day. Following wounds Gravina received at the Battle of Trafalgar, he died on the 9th March 1806, at the age of 49. On his death-bed he said, `I am a dying man, but I die happy; I am going, I hope and trust, to join Nelson, the greatest hero that the world perhaps has produced.`

An interesting mantel Clock made from the boss of an early laminated dark-wood aircraft Propeller with eight mounting bolt holes and stamped to the top ``DRG No OE8101/1, D 9`6``, P 6.40``, JAGUAR IVC, S No B5, 7 32``, mounted with a brushed finish metal clock face with Arabic numerals and later quartz movement. 14`` wide, 8 3/8`` high, 6 3/16`` deep. This originally 9`6`` diameter propeller was used on an Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar IV C engine. (The Jaguar engine was an air cooled 14 cylinder radial aero engine having two banks of seven cylinders, the then new design of engine was first run on the 21st June 1922 and developed 300 hp. The mark IV C was a modified version of the engine developed in 1928, it by that time had been increased in cubic capacity by an increase of the bores to 5 1/2 inches and displaced 24.8 litres, developed 400 hp and consumed around 20 gallons of fuel per hour. In spite of having a reputation for vibrational harshness attributed to the absence of a crankshaft main bearing between the two banks of cylinders, it was, it seems, fitted to 43 different types of aircraft and it was produced in various versions, the last development being the supercharged Jaguar VIII A of 1929. A Flight magazine article of April 8th 1926 fascinatingly refers to an epic flight by Mr. (later Sir) Alan Cobham from London to Cape town and back to London of some 17,000 miles in a de Haviland 50 bi-plane aircraft G-EBFO powered by one of these engines. After dismantling for inspection, the engine proved to be in virtually new condition with infinitesimally small amounts of wear in spite of having travelled through highly inhospitable conditions and large variations in climate.)
