NELSON HORATIO: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805.A good L.S., Horatio Nelson (a bold example with his left hand, just months after his right arm had been amputated), one page, folio, New Bond Street, London, 11th November 1797, to James Crow (sic). Nelson announces 'I am this day favoured by your transmission to me of the Unanimous Vote of thanks which the Corporation of Norwich have been pleased to Honor me with, and also that they have honoured me with the freedom of their City' and continues to ask for his gratification to be expressed to the Corporation for 'enrolling my Name amongst the Honorary Freemen of their ancient and most respectable City', further thanking Crowe for 'the very flattering language in which you have conveyed the high Honor wch. the City of Norwich have conferred upon me'. Nelson concludes his letter 'Whenever the service which I owe my King and Country will permit of my coming into Norfolk I shall then take the first opportunity of Personally thanking the Corporation of Norwich….' With blank integral leaf. A few very minor, small neat splits at the edges of a couple of folds and with some light age toning to the edges, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG James Crowe (c.1750-1807) British Surgeon who served as Mayor of Norwich in 1774 & 1797. The present letter was signed by Nelson at an important stage in his career, regarded by the military historian Colin White as 'arguably the most important year of his [Nelson's] life - his Year of Destiny' further observing that 'It brought him victory, and the popular adulation he craved, at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent against the Spanish in February and disaster, and a crippling wound, when his attack on Tenerife in July was bloodily repulsed. Above all, however, his actions in 1797 established his reputation as one of the leading lights of his profession and led directly to the appointment that was to raise him to the status of national hero in 1798.' (from Nelson - The New Letters edited by Colin White, 2005).  Having returned to England to convalesce, Nelson moved to London in October 1797 to seek expert medical attention for his amputated arm. He spent the last months of the year slowly recuperating and it was during this time that he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London (as well as Norwich, as demonstrated by the present letter) and a pension of £1000 per annum. During his life time Nelson was voted a Freeman of a number of cities and boroughs including Bath, Salisbury, Exeter, Plymouth, Monmouth, Sandwich, Oxford, Hereford and Worcester, although one imagines that being awarded the Freedom of the City of Norwich, in his home county of Norfolk, would have been considered more significant than most to the Admiral.  Provenance: Previously sold by Sotheby's as lot 220 in their sale of 14th December 1992.

May you score equally for your own funds this year…..I said most of what I had to say to the printers last year’. In a postscript Kipling explains that his correspondent’s ‘shortish address doesn’t look wholesome’ and he is therefore addressing his reply to Burlington House. With blank integral leaf (a strip of tape to the edge appears as a remnant of previous mounting). About VG Burlington House was occupied by the Royal Academy from 1873 and also by the Geological Society of London, the Royal Astronomical Society and the Society of Antiquaries in the following year in an arrangement which lasted until 1968.

A RARE .650 PERCUSSION CARBINE, UNSIGNED, MODEL 'ROYAL DOCKYARD BATTALION ISSUE', no visible serial number, circa 1850 and of similar form to a Constabulary Carbine (q.v), with smoothbore iron 26 1/2in. barrel, block fore-sight, no provision for rear-sight, solid rounded top-tang, borderline engraved bar-action lock marked 'RL. DOCKYD. BATTN.', walnut full-stock with brass furniture, rear iron sling swivel (front absent), variant Hanoverian bayonet catch and dome-headed iron ramrod Other Notes: The Dockyard Battalions were first formed around 1846 when the development of steam-powered vessels provoked worries about a surprise invasion. A Royal Commission recommended strengthening the defences of the Royal Dockyards hence the Dockyard Battalions were formed and a sum of £20,000 was granted for their establishment in 1847. The battalions had many different aspects including infantry, artillery, boat battalions, sappers and musicians. The officers of the battalions were usually employees holding high office in the dockyards. In 1847, the strength of the battalion was 10,000 men and officers - 2,000 in Portsmouth, 1395 at Chatham, 1784 at Devonport, 1057 at Deptford, 994 at Woolwich, 890 at Sheerness and 817 at Pembroke excluding officers and sergeants. Men from victualling yards in Gosport and Plymouth were also recruited. Employees between 18 - 55 years were eligible for entry which was voluntary at first but became a condition of employment afterwards. Officers were not gazetted in the normal way by London but were described as "esquires" for Captains and "gents" for Lieutenants. The uniform was a duck fatigue dress and forage cape loaned free of charge. Drills took place in summer months for which the men were allowed to go home early from work and then return for drill, for which they received two hours extra pay. Failure to return for drill resulted in half a day's pay being docked. Although small arms drill was undertaken mainly by men under the age of 36, most of the drills were for handling heavy guns and the management of launches and gunboats. Retired Royal Marine instructors acted as the drill instructors. The Battalions were all disbanded in 1857.

Provenance: Sold at Christie’s 30 th November 2006 - Sale 7284 – Lot 626 (coronet and doublet and breeches only). Sold for £12,000. George IV’s Coronation was notable for its pomp and extravagance. Coming so soon after the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, The King was determined that his power should be further reinforced by a coronation to surpass the lavish ceremony held for the former emperor in 1804 – the result was the most expensive coronation ever held in Britain (costing over £9.5 million in today’s money). The costumes worn by the participants in the procession from Westminster Hall to the Abbey were one of the most notable aspects of the coronation. King George, with his personal interest in costume, assisted with the design of some of the outfits which were loosely based on the clothing of the Elizabethan and Stuart periods. John Fane, 10 th Earl of Westmorland (1759 – 1841), was a British Tory politician who served in most of the cabinets of the period, primarily as Lord Privy Seal, a position which he held for thirty-five years from 1798 (except for the years 1806 and 1807). Lot 244

English School - early 18th century - of Naval interest, Watercolour on ivory portrait miniature, Portrait of Daniel Furzer (d1719) with his son John Furzer and ship behind - presumably HMS Dover, Indistinctly inscribed verso 'Daniel Furzer Lieut RN H.M. Ship Dover killed in action 1719, & his infant and only son John Furzer', 7cm x 5.25cm, Framed and glazedAccording to family notes this Daniel Furzer (c1719) was the son of Daniel Furzer (d 17th Mar 1715), Surveyor of the Navy to William III and brother to John Furzer who was drowned with HM frigate The Hind in 1721 off Jersey. Daniel Furzer junior married Ann Grey. They had one son John Furzer (d1721), a purser in the Royal Navy in charge of HM Dockyard. Daniel Furzer painted here is recorded as being in service on HMS Dover, which saw action against the Spanish off Cape St Vincent on 9/12/1719. It is presumed that the ship painted in this miniature is HMS Dover. CONDITION REPORT: The frame may not be original to the miniature - it is broken at the top and the bottom and held together by old metal supports, there is also an old chip to the frame. The ivory miniature appears to be ok but lightly grubby. There are some small paint losses to the bottom of the sitters hair and a little to the ship and there is some rubbing to the sea and jacket of the son at 4 and 5 o'clock and similar rubbing to the edge at 7 and 8 o'clock. The backing card and paper to the reverse of the miniature are not original. When viewed from the back it would appear that there is a thin film folded over the edge from the front side - this is only be around the edge of the miniature to hold the glass to the miniature.Trevanion & Dean does not ship items containing ivory or tortoiseshell outside the EU. The government have proposed legislation to create a UK law to ban the sale of all ivory which sources suggest will come into effect between July and October 2019. Please note, this means that this lot is legal to sell now but may not be in the future.

A Queen's South Africa medal (1899-1901) 3rd type reverse with South Africa 1901, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony clasps, naming 27322. TPR. J.J.R. SMYTHE. C. IN C. BDY. GD., together with a South African War Veterens enamelled lapel badge. (2) Around 15th January 1900 Lord Roberts announced the intention to form a bodyguard from picked colonials, to be commanded by Major Laing, an Officer who had served 91st & 93rd regiments (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders) who had settled in South Africa. In November 1900 Lord Roberts issued an order empowering Major Laing to raise a fighting regiment 570 strong, with 2 guns, 2 pom-poms and 2 machine guns to be called "The Bodyguard". So great was Laings popularity that almost immediately he got over 1000 recruits. The corps took to the field in Orange River Colony, unfortuneatly the first reference to them in a dispatch was in connection with a grevious mishap which took place on the 3rd January 1901.In his telegram of 6th January Lord Kitchener said "from reports of some of the wounded who have arrived at Heilbron, it appears that a detachment of Bodyguard 120 strong of General Knox's force came into contact with a superior number of enemy near Lindley. I regret to say that Laing, 2 officers and 15 men were killed with 2 officers and 20 men wounded. No details have been received from General Knox of this action." The fighting was of the most severe character and the number of casualties in the rank and file turned out to be far greater than the numbers quoted by Lord Kitchener.
