Diary of a Voyage to Calcutta by Thomas Maunsell, KCB, Surgeon General. Born 1st July 1839, died 29th December 1937 CB, (1896) KCB (1906).A leather bound notebook 18.5 x 11.3cm, densely filled with handwritten text, watercolours, hand drawn maps, photographs, pasted cuttings and stamps. The bulk of the notebook taken up with a daily diary written by Thomas Maunsell on board the Ship 'Copenhagen' bound for Calcutta. Commenced Plymouth, August 2nd 1862, completed December 7th 1862.The diary gives us a fascinating glimpse into life on board ship at this time. Maunsell, 23 years old, travelled with a servant so did not suffer much deprivation (although they were both very seasick during the many storms which he describes). The account gives details on weather, food, and the desire of his military companions to shoot everything that moves, swims or flies. Boredom affected him considerably. As a Catholic, his Sunday worship was restricted to below decks, though after a period he celebrated mass in the company of a number of ships fellow Catholic crew. Musically accomplished, he helped entertain his companions, singing and playing the violin. The diary also contains illustrations; a delightful sketch of his cabin (starboard after cabin), maps of the journey, two accomplished watercolours: 'Cape of Good Hope soldier' and 'The halt at Lak Bungalow, E.Indies' which shows a laden carriage and two Indian figures. There are three faded sepia photographs which we can assume were taken in the 1860s: 'Toms Bungalow at Meerut' another, grander bungalow with servants outside and a small gig or carriage with two Indian servants. At the end of the diary section is a photograph of Tom in uniform. The notebook then becomes a record made by another member of the family of Tom's letters, further journeys to and from India, visits home on leave and also that of his brother Robert Frederick Maunsell, Staff Assistant-Surgeon who sadly died in India in 1869. The family had his remains brought back to Dublin. A very interesting historical notebook.Note: Surgeon General Thomas Maunsell was the son of John Maunsell Esq and the seventh of a large family of nine children from Dingle, County Kerry. He was in the first batch of undergraduates at Cardinal Newman's Catholic University of Ireland from whence he entered the British Army on 1 October 1860. He took the the LRCSI in 1859 and the LRCPI in 1860. His university conferred on him the LLD. He served with the Burmese expedition in 1886-1887 for which he was mentioned in despatches and received the frontier medal with clasp. In 1895, he was with the Chitral Relief Force on the North West Frontier of India under Sir Robert Low as Principal Medical Officer. He was again mentioned in despatches (London Gazette of 15 November 1895), appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath and received the medal with clasp. In 1911, Surgeon General Thomas Maunsell founded the Guild of Catholic Doctors of St Luke, St Cosmas and St Damian. He was an Honorary Associate of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in England.(See illustration)
