The lining canvas is old and brittle with tears forming around the tacking edges. There is a hole above the sitter’s head and a tear to the right hand side. The paint layer is stable overall. The portrait has an old, degraded varnish which appears to have been partially cleaned but leaving dark residues in the paint texture, leading to a mottled surface
