COURTNEY, 2ND BATTALION 3RD (EAST KENT, THE BUFFS) REGIMENT OF FOOT (LATE 107TH REGIMENT OF FOOT, BENGAL LIGHT INFANTRY) with single clasp 1879 (839. PTE. J. COURTNEY. 2-3RD FOOT), engraved, unmounted; together with an original typed summary of the recipient's long military service, twenty-one years with the colours, and two years Great War service: 'Record of James Courtney 107th Regiment' (Bengal Light Infantry) On the 2nd October 1868 enlisted at Taunton, proceeded to Preston, Lancashire. 15th October 1870 sailed for India from Portsmouth, landed November 1870 at Bombay, proceeded to Dumdum, thence in 1872 to Punah, thence to Secunderbad, homeward bound 1875 landed at Cowes proceeded to Parkhurst 1876, volunteered to the 3rd Buffs (2nd Battalion) in June 1876, proceeded to Mulingar, Ireland, 1876, proceeded to Cape, October 1876, wrecked on the ship 'St. Lawrence' 1876, (all saved on board), landed at Cape Town 1876, proceeded to East London, from East London to Dunbar 1877 proceeded to Peter Martizbrig (marching, no trains) 1878 to Gayla River (Africa) 11th January 1879, Zulu Campaign, medal & clasp, after the campaign proceeded to Singapore, three years at Singapore thence to Unkong 2 1/2 years, homeward bound to England 1885, landed at Port Said on way home, proceeded to Cairo, from Cairo up the Nile to Assoam, proceeded to England June 1886, landed at Portsmouth 1886 and went to Dover 1887, pensioned out November 1889. 15th September 1915 re-enlisted in the GREAT WAR at age 64, served at Taunton till October 1917, transferred to Labour Corp 1917, invalided, discharge September 1917. ONE OF THE OLDEST VETERANS IN CHARD.' Note: The 2nd Battalion, 3rd (East Kent, The Buffs) Regiment of Foot had previously served in the Ionian islands and the West Indies. Towards the end of 1878, the HQ and 5 companies of the Buffs, which had been scattered over a wide area of Natal, were ordered to concentrate at Thring's Post, near the mouth of the Tugela river. Early in November three more companies arrived from Mauritius, at which time they were ordered to construct an earthwork on the right bank of the river, which subsequently became known as Fort Pearson. The Regiment served at the Battle of Inyezane. Two companies of the 3rd were subsequently present at the Battle of Gingindlovu, having been detached from Pearson's column for convoy duties, and thereby escaping being besieged at Eshowe, like their regimental comrades. The Regiment formed part of Crealock's 1st Division in the second invasion of Zululand.
