WILDE (OSCAR)Salomé: drame en un acte, FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED 'A MON CHER AMI/ ARISTIDE BRUANT/ OSCAR WILDE' on flyleaf preceding half-title, one of 600 copies, device by Félicien Rops on the title page, green cloth-backed marbled boards, red leather spine label, original purple wrappers lettered in silver bound in [Mason 348], 8vo, Paris and London, Librairie d'Art Indépendent and Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1893Footnotes:PRESENTATION COPY TO ARISTIDE BRUANT (1851–1925), a successful singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who ran a cabaret in Montmartre and was immortalized by Toulouse Lautrec as the man in a wide-brimmed hat, cape, and red scarf on several posters. In was during his sojourn in Paris in 1891 that Wilde met Bruant, who called him 'le joyeux fantaisiste anglais' (Ellmann, p.330). On more than one occasion, Bruant hosted dinners at which Wilde got to know André Gide.Wilde's play Salomé was rehearsed during June 1892 for production at the Palace Theatre in London, with Sarah Bernhardt in the title role. However, the Lord Chamberlain refused a licence owing to representation of Biblical characters on the public stage and it was therefore decided to move the premiere to Paris. 'Wilde went ahead with plans to publish his play whether or not it could be staged. The title page was to name the Librairie d'Art Indépendent in Paris along with Elkin Mathews & John Lane in London as joint publishers... It was defiantly published in February 1893. Wilde said he had it bound in 'Tyrian purple' wrappers to go with Alfred Douglas's gilt hair' (Ellmann, p.353).Provenance: Laurin Guilloux Buffetaud, 29 November 1989, lot 564.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

This is a book and signed letter written by T E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia (1888 - 1935). Lawrence was a British military officer who led the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turkish empire in World War I and achieved great fame for his actions during the war. The book is titled Seven Pillars of Wisdom and is an autobiographical account of his experiences in the conflict. It is a second printing of the book (1935). After the war, Lawrence joined the Foreign Office, working with the British government and King Faisal to create an Arab state that would include Syria, Iraq, and other countries in the Middle East. Faisal was a leader of the revolt and had great respect for Lawrence. In 1922, Lawrence retreated from public life, and spent his remaining years as an enlisted man, mostly in the Royal Air Force, with a brief stint in the Army. The body of the letter reads “Dear Madam ... Jonathan Cape has duly sent me on your letter, which dates from last summer, I see. It is a very pleasant thing to come along, casually, and I am most grateful for the kindness you offer. Fortunately, there is no need of a refuge, other than this. Not that I regard the R.A.F. as a refuge. Flying, and the progress of flying, is a very great interest of mine - almost a profession, as the Catholics would have it - and the life and work I have led for the last ten years in our Air Force have been wholly delightful. Still, it was kindly of you to make that offer. Yours [ ly], T E Shaw”. “T E Shaw” was the name Lawrence adopted in the 1920‘s because he grew tired of his celebrity. He stopped working with the British government in 1922 and enlisted in the Royal Air Force under an assumed name (John Hume Ross), and when the press found out about it, the RAF was embarrassed and released him from service. Lawrence found it impossible to reenlist under his own name, so he signed up as a private with the Royal Tank Corps in 1923 under the name “T E Shaw”, which was probably taken from his friendship with George Bernard Shaw, the noted Irish playwright. Somehow Lawrence was able to enlist with the RAF again in 1925 by using this new name, and he legally adopted the name in 1927. The letter was sent from Mount Batten, the Royal Air Force base near Plymouth, England. You can see the address in the upper right corner. We are not sure who wrote the letter that prompted Lawrence to write this one, but the consignor found the letter in the book when she lived in New Jersey, and she believes whoever wrote the letter to Jonathan Cape was concerned about Lawrence’s sexual orientation, and that’s why the person offered him sanctuary. There has always been speculation about his sexual orientation - some people believe he was asexual, others claim he was homosexual, but this has never really been confirmed. He was also captured and tortured by the Turks during the war and historians believe he was raped by the Turks at this time. The Criminal Law Amendment, which was passed in England in 1885, also outlawed homosexual activity by men, and it is possible the person who wrote to Lawrence through Jonathan Cape was offering Lawrence shelter from criminal prosecution for his alleged orientation. We don’t know, but it would be nice to see what the other letter said. (Jonathan Cape was the publishing company in England that handled the book for Lawrence, and Herbert Jonathan Cape was the founder of the company, and we’re not sure if Lawrence received a letter from the publishing house or from the founder of the company. Lawrence might have known Herbert Jonathan Cape personally, but we can’t say for sure about that either.) The letter is clearly written in his hand and signed by him, and it is dated May 1, 1933, just two years before he died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. The letter is rare and adds to some of the historical record for Lawrence; there is very light foxing in a couple of spots. The frame is 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. wide and the letter is 8 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. wide.

Other versions of the group exist with the addition of either a dog or a sheep on the base, and with the absence of both Cupid and Harlequin. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

LIVINGSTONE DAVID: (1813-1873) Scottish Missionary & Explorer of Africa. A printed portion of the proof to Livingstone's publication Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. (c.1857), bearing various holograph corrections by Livingstone. The proof states, in full (with Livingstone's holograph corrections in bold), 'The instruments I carried, though few, were the [be]st of their kind. A sextan[t], by the famed makers [Tr]oughton and Sims, of Fleet-Street; a chronometer watch, with a stop to the seconds' hand -- an admirable contrivance for enabling a person to take the exact time of observations:  it was constructed by Dent, of the Strand (61) for the Royal Geographical Society, and selected for the service by the President, Admiral Smythe, to whose judgment & kindness I am in this and other matters deeply indebted. It was pronounced by Mr. Maclear to equal most chronometers in performance. For both one of these excellent instruments I have much pleasure in recording my obligations to my good friend Colonel Steele, and at the same time to Mr. Maclear for much of my ability to use them.  Besides these, I had a thermometer by Dollond; a compass from the Cape Observatory, and a small pocket one in addition; anda good small telescope and with a stand capable of being screwed into a tree. 11th of November, 1853. - Left the town of Linyanti, accompanied by Sekeletu and his principal men, to embark on the Chobe. The chief came to the river in order to see that all was right at parting. We crossed five branches of the Chobe before reaching the main' With various tears and age wear, professionally restored and laid down. About G   Livingstone's Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa was published by John Murray in London in 1857.

BURTON RICHARD F.: (1821-1890) English Explorer. A rare set of illustrated manuscript notes by Burton, unsigned, seven pages, 8vo, n.p. (London?), n.d. (c.1868-70), on the blind embossed stationery of the Athenaeum Club, Pall Mall. Burton's miscellaneous notes, in his typically small (and at times indecipherable) hand appear to be references made from The Life of Prince Henry of Portugal by Richard Henry Major, Burton noting that Prince Henry 'declared his object was to “acquire wealth, knowledge of the world and, if possible, fame”', and also recording references to various countries including Santiago (noting that it was not discovered by Antonio de Nolle but by the Portuguese Diogo Gomez), Sierra Leone, Cape of Good Hope, Venezuela, China, Ceylon, Germany and others, as well as hippopotamuses (described by Cadamosto as a horse-fish), the Pillars of Hercules and various other explorers including Christopher Columbus (who had endured 'twelve years hardship & fatigue'), the cartographer Martin Behaim etc. To one page of the notes Burton has drawn a detailed map of the region of Africa covering Tanzania, Mozambique, the Congo and Kenya in which Burton has identified various lakes including Lake Albert, Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika. An interesting manuscript linking two of history's noted explorers, albeit centuries apart, and enhanced by Burton's wonderful illustration of African lakes. Some light age wear and a few small, neat professional repairs to splits at the central vertical folds, none of which affect the text. About VG The Life of Prince Henry of Portugal by Richard Henry Major was published in London in 1868 and is an account of 'the discovery, within one century, of half the world' by Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460), the main initiator of the Age of Discovery, and included Major's summary of 'new facts in the discovery of the Atlantic Islands, a refutation of French claims to priority in discovery, Portuguese knowledge (subsequently lost) of the Nile Lakes and the history of the naming of America' drawn from 'authentic contemporary documents'.

Watson explains that he had previously sent his correspondent a letter to Bristol 'giving the names of the two missionaries we have appointed to Cape Henry', although continues to again provide their names as Elliot Jones and William Harvey, as well as the name of the ship that they will sail on from Bristol. Watson further writes 'We feel most strongly the importance of your King's accommodation' and urges his correspondent not to lose any time in making arrangements, further commenting 'I am sorry that King Henry has been prejudice against our missionaries from what took place at Port au Prince. I can say most confidently that no interference with political affairs could be charged upon the Missionaries. That they were whites, and a suspicion that they were spies of King Henry, operated greatly against them; but they acted very prudently in most difficult circumstances' also remarking 'The more I have seen of Messrs. Jones and Harvey the more confidently can I commend them to you, for men of more sweetness of temper, and devotedness to God, I have rarely met. I am sure that if they are permitted to develope their character in the free exercise of their ministry they will not discredit your recommendation'. With very heavy traces of former mounting to the verso of the final page, some light overall staining and a few small tears and areas of paper loss, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, FR                                                                                                                             Henri Christophe (1767-1820) King Henry I of Haiti 1811-20. The only monarch of the Kingdom of Haiti, Henry I had altered the name of his capital from Cape Francois to Cape Henry in honour of his own name.

Senex, 1726.⁂ Scarce account of Shelvocke's privateering adventures through the Pacific and with what Cowan calls "the fullest account of California, the natives and their features, of any of the old voyagers." The map depicts California as an island and two of the plates show natives of California; there are also early references to Californian gold and Peruvian guano. It has been suggested that Shevlocke's account of the passage around Cape Horn, where a sailor killed an albatross, inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
