WILLIAM KIMMINS McMINN (1820-1898) THE SHIP PICKWICK, CAPT. GRAVES Signed and dated 1853 (? slightly unclear), inscribed with title, oil on canvas 48.5 x 61.5cm. ++ Lined; some associated retouching and craquelure; needs a light clean The vessel is shown with the classic backdrop of Cape Horn. At this date, she was sailing regularly between Liverpool and Valparaiso but disappears from record after 1853. It is possible that she was wrecked but more likely that she was so beaten up by the Cape Horn passage that she might well have been condemned as no longer seaworthy and sold locally once she made port in Chile. We are grateful to Michael Naxton for his help with this note.

Roman, 100 to 200 CE. This strigil blade forms a curving 90 degree angle and has finely-wrought decorations on one side suggesting a spear or some other kind of blade. It comes with a custom stand. In ancient Rome, strigils were used for bathing, especially by men who engaged in physical activity. They are strongly associated with athletes. The men (often with the help of their slaves), would coat their bodies in oil and then some abrasive substance like sand or ground pumice; the strigil was used for scraping off this coating. There were different sized strigils for different parts of the body and they are sometimes found in a set attached to a ring. Includes custom stand. Size: strigil itself measures 5" x 4" x 1/2" (12.7 cm x 10.2 cm x 1.27cm); 7-1/2"x 3-1/2" x 1-1/4" including stand (19 cm x 8.9 cm x 3.2 cm). Provenance: Ex-private New York, New York collection; ex-private Wagner collection, Cape Cod, MA, acquired in 1960's Condition: Intact strigil blade without handle (the handle would most likely have been a separate piece of bronze and there is no evidence for it having broken off, although there is some wear to one end where it may have been attached). Fully covered in green patina. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Nude aside from his grand cape and intricately crossed headbands and chin strap, this impressive male figure sits in a crouched position with both hands - fingers and nail beds finely delineated - placed upon his knees so that his back curves giving the impression that he is a hunchbacked gent. In the Pre-Columbian world, such a physiognomic deformity was understood to be a sign that this special individual was touched by the supernatural. His characteristically elongated head boasts large coffee bean shaped eyes, puffy perhaps coca filled cheeks, and a bulging form emerging from his mouth. This represents a "death bubble" or jade bead placed in the "boca" (mouth) of the deceased elite. The clay body is nicely burnished Ameca grey for the most part with red highlights upon the ridge of his equine nose as well as his left knee. There are also signs of black painted decoration upon the face, arms, and chest that read well with the assistance of a magnifying glass. A wondrous and large example, replete with rich iconography and fine artistry, from this shaft tomb culture of ancient West Mexico. Size: 8.5" L x 6.75" W x 11.75" H (21.6 cm x 17.1 cm x 29.8 cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Seattle, Wa collection acquired at auction Condition: Right foot shows signs of repair. Possible repair to back of neck. Otherwise in excellent condition with beautiful patina, impressive burnishing marks and manganese blooms. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111753

One of the foliate swags going from the mouth of the lion to the centre of the face of the jardiniere is broken off and missing in its entirety. The next swag along is cracked and has been re-glued.
