Dr Eric Dalrymple Gairdner Medical Officer (1878-1933) Great War medal group. He held the rank of Major in the R.A.M.C (T) and during the war was Medical Officer attached to the 1/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers. The medals displayed from left to right include; Distinguished Service Order and Bar awarded in 1916 and a year later a bar to the Order 'for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty'. Queen's South African Medal (1899-1902) for service in South Africa between 11th October 1898 and 31st May 1902 (two bars awarded for the Cape Colony and Orange Free State). 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal (1914-1920), Victory Medal with oak leaf denoting 'Mentioned in Despatches'. Saving Life at Sea medal, this medal was awarded after the evacuation in 1917 of troops from Gallipoli on the SS Ivernia. The ship was torpedoed off the coast of Greece and sank. "The Captain and Dr Gairdner were the last to leave the ship". Eric Gairdner received the medal for rescuing drowning troops in the water.Efficiency Decoration Medal, Croix de Guerre avec Palme, the French decoration for bravery and awarded by the French Government to members of the Armed Forces of their allies. A letter of recommendation signed by Lt. Col. J.B Cook states 'This Medical Officer all through the campaign has displayed consistently high courage, coolness and devotion to duty. His example has been an inspiration to all ranks" 9th June 1917. His fellow soldier described him as the bravest man I ever knew and that was saying something in a Scottish brigade. His courage was widely recognised and it was reported that he was recommended to receive the Victoria Cross. His humour too was legendary. It was recollected that on the occasion that he rescued several torpedoed troops who were drowning, his voice could be heard across the dark-lit sea "Well, boys, that was a bit of a surprise wasn't it?" He was seriously wounded several times. Medical experts considered that his life was cut short due to the injuries sustained. The Ayrshire Post obituary described Dr Eric Dalrymple Gairdner as having left behind him the record of a beautiful Christian life, true, brave and debonair. Should we not be inspired by his example and endeavor to carry on such a tradition?A Memorial tablet, executed in Carrara marble , in his Parish Church in Ayr bears an inscription of a life well-lived - In loving memory of Dr Eric Dalrymple Gairdner, gallant soldier and a very perfect gentleman.References: Recommendation letter by Lt. Col. JB Cook, 5th Royal Fusiliers, 9th June 1917.London Gazette, 14th August 1917.The Ayrshire Post October 25th 1935.British Medical Journal November 1933.
