WW2 British Nurses Cape Decorated with Cloth Formation Sign, Collected by Sister Evelyn Mary Fox Queen Alexandria’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (Q.A.I.M.N.S), the standard issue navy blue cape has stitched to the inside a number of British cloth formation signs and shoulder titles including RAF Air Gunners brevet wing, 1st corps embroidered formation sign, 59th division embroidered formation sign, ARP overalls patch, printed Airborne Pegasus, painted 11th armoured division formation sign, printed 14th army formation sign, silk woven 2nd division formation sign, Foresters white on red embroidered shoulder title, embroidered RAMC shoulder title, embroidered 7th armoured division formation sign, printed Royal Artillery shoulder title, East Surrey embroidered shoulder title, American Red Cross Military Welfare Service arm badge, American 11th Airborne patch, 48th division formation sign, 49th division printed formation sign, Wiltshire regiment embroidered shoulder title, London district embroidered formation sign, 15th Indian corps formation sign, 1st Anti-Aircraft division embroidered formation sign, POLAND air force nationality shoulder title, printed 51stHighland division formation sign, Royal Welch Fusiliers embroidered shoulder title, combined operations embroidered formation sign, 5th Anti-Aircraft division formation sign, RAF Regiment cloth shoulder title, plus others. Scarce WW2 Polish Red Cross Military Nursing Service Insignia Grouping, consisting of two embroidered circular badges with Red Cross emblem to the centre and embroidered details around the edge. Pair of wool embroidered slip on shoulder rank tabs with embroidered red cross and two bullion bars, three larger rank badges on khaki possibly for a greatcoat of cape. Boer War & WW1 Medal Group of Three consisting of Queens South Africa medal with five clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. The medal was awarded to 1956 3rd CL TPR D THOMSON S.A.C. WW1 British War medal and Allied Victory medal awarded for his service in the Royal Engineers, named correctly around the rim, 133482 SPR D THOMSON R.E. The medals come with South African Constabulary certificate of discharge. Medals remain in generally good condition.

THE LITHOGRAPHS OF PENCIL DRAWINGS BY BELL WOULD APPEAR TO BE EXTREMELY RARE AND WERE PRESUMABLY PRINTED IN THE COLONY. CHARLES DAVIDSON BELL WAS THE FIRST SURVEYOR GENERAL IN THE CAPE COLONY AND AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST, WHO DESIGNED BY THE FAMOUS TRIANGULAR CAPE OF GOOD HOPE POSTAGE STAMPS. HE MARRIED, AS HIS FIRST WIFE, ON 3RD JUNE 1841 MARTHA ANTOINETTE EBDEN BY WHOM HE HAD THREE CHILDREN BEFORE DIVORCING HER IN 1850 ON THE GROUNDS OF HER ADULTERY WITH DR LESTOCK WILSON STEWART.

Awarded to Private James Lumley Second East Surrey Regiment and Northumberland Fusiliers. Together with portrait of the recipient in Maltese Masonic Regalia.
A 21st Lancers, Battle of Omdurman, Khartoum, V.C. entitlement group of 6 to 2998 Private Thomas Byrne of B Squadron, 21st Lancers. Replica Victoria Cross. Queen's Sudan Medal. Queen's South Africa Medal with Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps (this inscribed 'V.C' in gothic script). Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Edward VII). Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896-1908, Khartoum Clasp. 1937 Coronation medal. Private Byrne although wounded himself, saved the life of Lieutenant Molyneux and helped him to safety, this act of bravery was witnessed and documented by Winston Churchill who took part in this, the last full cavalry charge by a British regiment. The group is sold with a letter from Michael Naxton, curator of the Ashcroft Trust V.C. Collection confirming that not withstanding the replica V.C, in his opinion this group are the medals issued to and worn by Private Thomas Byrne V.C. With this group is the original typed Nairobi Police report from 1949 detailing the robbery of the original V.C. from Byrne's eldest son Edward. The lot also contains Private Byrne's personal invitation to attend the 1929 House of Lords dinner given in honour of V.C. recipients, plus typed transcripts from Churchill and Conan Doyle's writings. 5 naval documents written in 1809: to Captain Hotham HMS Defiance off Rochfort from Admiral Beresford, content keeping an eye on the enemy, dated 22nd Feb; No 2: copy of log signed by Lt Commander M.O. Gregory re contest of Cape Finisterre content: obscuring the enemy of 6 sail of the line and 2 frigates and 2 brigs, Capt Beresford offered them battle which was declined etc, dated 23rd Feb (signed 27th); No 3 HMS Naiad off Rochfort, content: saw squadron of enemy ships 8 sail of the line and 2 frigates standing into Basque Roads. Rear Admiral Stopford in the Ceasar made signal for the Naiad to proceed, at 7 saw enemy squadron hove to in Basque Roads etc, much detail continues of movements of Capt Beresford and Sir John Duckworth , the letter signed by Capt Thomas Dundas (intelligence report also contains list of enemy and British force of ships); No 4: a list of His Majesty’s ships of the line in the Mediterranean 6th March 1809, 18 in number together with the names of their commanders and flag officers; No 5: a listing of signals made from ship to ship off Rochfort on the 24th Feb 1809. Spanish America: Three dollars, salvaged from the wreck of HMS Thetis: one, of Charles III (no date remains) bears an impression from another coin and is badly corroded; the other two are completely encrusted.Note: Ex Wallis and Wallis sale 114 (August 1964), Ex RUSI Museum. HMS Thetis was en route from Rio de Janiero to England under the command of Captain Samuel Burgess with over $800,000 when, on 5th December 1830 she was wrecked at Cape Frio, Brazil, 28 mariners losing their lives. Attempts to salvage the cargo were put in the charge of Captain Dickenson of HMS Lightning who, with diving bells and a 150 feet derrick mounted on the cliff face, managed to recover a significant proportion of the dollars. Captain Burgess faced a Court Martial and lost 1 years seniority, the Court judging that too much navigation was down to dead reckoning with not enough sounding being taken.

Obverse: figure of Victory stands on a cannon barrel transported within a hollow log and drawn by two horses, legend “L’Armee Francais Passe Lt St. Bernard. XXVIII Floreal An VIII MDCCC”, by Dubois. Reverse: ring bearing 11 keys within palms, legend “Bataille De Marengo” with “XXV Prairial An VIII MDCCC” in exergue. Diameter 41mm. GEF. Plate 3 Note: In May 1800 First Consul Bonaparte led his army through the St Bernard Pass in the Alps to gain entry into Italy; the dismantled cannon barrels being transported in hollowed out logs which acted as sledges through the snow and ice. On 14th June the French army defeated the Austrian forces at the Battle of Marengo in Piedmont. David painted an iconic image of Napoleon, with billowing cape, crossing the Alps likening him to Hannibal and Charlemagne, however, rather than being mounted on horseback, Napoleon made the passage on a mule. The 11 keys represent keys to 11 Fortresses passed to the French after Marengo. The medallion was struck in 1809
