Complete with one folding lithographed map, Two lithographed plans (one double-page, one folding), Twenty aquatint plates (one double-page) and seventeen wood engravings in the text. Cont. full mottled calf and later spine; little rubbed; occasional foxing and the odd small tear.
*Herschel (John Frederick William, 1792-1871). 'The Forty-Foot Telescope at Slough', photographic print made in 1890 [by John Werge] from John Herschel's glass negative of [9 September] 1839, circular silver print (diameter 92mm), some small areas of abrasions or insect damage to paper surface, mounted on paper support incorporating printed title and descriptive letterpress and dated August 1890, with signatures of Herschel's two sons, mounted on card, framed in period wooden frame, glazed, contemporary Ryman & Co. stationery label (split) and fragment of related (or original) printed paper descriptive notice to frame verso, overall 40 x 49cm This is one of only 25 prints made in 1890 from the original negative, the earliest surviving photograph on glass. This was the only image recorded of the 40-foot telescope in Slough, Berkshire, assembled in 1787 by William Herschel (1738-1822), and dismantled in 1839. The massive reflecting telescope used a metal mirror four feet in diameter and weighed over a ton, and became a much-visited wonder of the age. By the time Herschel's son John took this photograph, the telescope structure had become unsafe through neglect. The photograph is mounted in a frame using the rungs from John Herschel's telescope used at Slough and Cape Town, South Africa. The negative, now faded almost beyond recognition, is preserved in the collections of the Science Museum, London. Provenance: From the family of Sir John Herschel, by direct descent through his daughter Amelia and her husband Sir Thomas Wade. See also following lot. (1)
South Africa; Cape of Good Hope. 1855-1904 used collection on black leaves, an above-average lot with a good range of triangulars. Includes 1d on blued, good margins but thinned, and a number of others on blued paper with three margins; 1857 1d brick-red on cream toned paper with large margins; 1d Woodblock, just touched at left; 4d Woodblock with good/clear margins, and a nice little group of DLRs. A good range of later issues with SG 32 and 33
South Africa; Cape of Good Hope. Mafeking. 1900 1d Goodyear and 3d Baden-Powell. An attractive group of six but regrettably with faults. SG 17 thinned under hinge remainder; SG 18, thinned; SG 20 (two shades), one sound but the other with a surface nick and slight foxing on reverse; SG 21, shallow thinning, and SG 22, also with fairly minor thinning. Ascension Postal History. 1867 envelope to Devonport from 'J. Clark Boiler Maker Ascension' and countersigned by 'John Hawkins for Co. Officer', Clark rating as a seaman, with 1d red Plate 97 paying the concessionary rate, cancelled by '250' numeral of Devonport. Light Ascension CDS of DE 2 67 to left of the stamp. A tear through the backflap affects the top of the envelope, affecting the CAPE PACKET/DEVONPORT CDS on the reverse, and there is a little staining. Plate 97 is not recorded in the SG listing. Sismondo Certificate of 2004, misstating the Plate number as 87. SG Z2 (from £3250)

A GILTMETAL AND PAINTED TORTOISESHELL PAIR CASED VERGE WATCH THOMAS CAPE LONDON No 882, with enamel dial, the movement having foliate pierced and engraved balance cock and foot and turned pillars, the outer case painted on the underside in polychrome with a lady standing beside a neo classical urn, 48mm diam++The enamel dial with hairline crack at 6 o'clock. The movement apparently complete but fusee chain detached and/or broken. No play in hinges, both cases closing tightly, wear to gilding on exterior of inner case, polychrome decoration and tortoiseshell on outer case in good condition, complete, not chipped. slightly faded and darkened with age. Two loops to reverse. VGC (Owen 285) Raised 20th April 1860; disbanded 30th September 1880. Re-raised 1883.

The announcement of the award of the DCM appeared in the London Gazette on the 13th February 1917. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has performed consistent good work throughout, and has at all times set a splendid example of courage and cheerfulness”.

CONDITION REPORT The Edwardian children's cape has age-related wear and soiling, some age-related wear to the shawls. The perfume boxes have age-related wear and some staining. The evening bags have age-related wear and loss of some beads.
