A Boer War Officers Shaving Kit believed to belong to Lt Colonel Fane. Comprising a lozenge shaped Copper set of twin mirrors having easel backs and leather straps. Also a leather pouch with cut throat razor. Both scratch marked Fane. ( unable to verify ownership, vendor believed to belong to the following ) FANE, CECIL, Lieutenant, was born at Biarritz, South of France, 10 September 1876, son of Captain F A Fane, Rifle Brigade. He was educated at Rugby, and was gazette! to the 12th (Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers 9 June, 1897, and was promoted to Lieutenant 21 March 1902. From 1899 to 1902 he served in the South African War, taking part in the advance on Kimberley, including action at Magersfontein; at the Relief of Kimberley; took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, February to May 1900, including those at Paardeberg; actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Houtnek (Thoba Mountain) and Zand River; in the Transvaal in May and June, 1900, including actions near Johannesburg and Diamond Hill; in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July to 29 November 1900; in the Orange River Colony, May to 29 November 1900, including actions at Lindley, Bethlehem and Witterbergen; served as Adjutant, 12th Lancers, June 1901 to 31 May 1902; again served during operations in the Transvaal 30 November 1900 to July 1901; also in Cape Colony, July 1901 to 31 May 1902 (Despatches [London Gazette, 8 February and 10 September 1901]; Queen's Medal with six clasps and King's Medal with two clasps). Ivory cape - exterior is good, colours are fresh, pink silk lining is worn at neck and silk has discoloured/faded in places.
A group of couture, late 50s-60s, comprising: Balenciaga purple silk shift dress, no 52823; Givenchy printed silk; Hardy Amies slubbed yellow silk gown; Lanvin tartan mohair cape; and a blue and white Capucci Boutique slubbed silk mini, average bust size 92cm, 36in (5) CONDITION REPORT: · All in need of cleaning but good condition · Lanvin cape - right shoulder seam needs re-stitching approx. 4cm (minor). · Givenchy - scattering of pin marks to front neckline, seam has been re-stitched 1cm at right underarm and approx. 10cm needs re-stitching at left hip seam, hem is faintly soiled at edge. All minor, colour is good. Bust 42in, waist 38in, hips 42in · Yellow Hardy Amies - very faint soiling at back of left cuff (hard to see), otherwise good. Bust 36in, waist 28in, hips 38in · Purple Balenciaga - fresh and colour is vibrant, extremely faint small brown stain to back bodice (very hard to see). Gentle fading at right hem, again very hard to see. Perspiration stains at underarms to lining only. Seam needs re-stitching approx. 2cm at right underarm. Zipper needs re-stitching approx. 6cm. All very minor. Bust 42in, waist 32in, hips 42in · Capucci - good condition, faint perspiration stains to lining only, not visible to exterior, hem has been altered. Bust 36in, waist 34in, hips 38in
1950s evening gowns, including John Cavanagh magenta taffeta ball gown with over-bodice, cummerbund and matching coat; black taffeta couture gown with pink gauze sash and matching paper taffeta cape; Dior London grey tulle ball gown trimmed with rosebuds; gold Indonesian brocade dress, orange organdy dress and a stole (qty) CONDITION REPORT: · Mixed condition, would benefit from cleaning. Black taffeta with pink scarf panel - good condition, back seam needs re-stitching approx. 3cm rear hem · Black taffeta cape - good condition · Cavanagh ensemble - lovely colour and shape but poor condition. All pieces have fading and are scattered with worm holes. Dress: hem is soiled and faded. 2 metal bones within bodice corset are snapped. Bodice: lacking one button, taffeta is wrinkled at inner elbows and scuffed at underarms. Faded at cuffs. Sash: colour is good, scattered with multiple worm holes. Coat: badly faded. · Satin stole - good condition · Orange dress - skirt has faint brown stains generally and pinholes to bodice · Indonesian brocaded dress - metallic threads are tarnished and rubbed in places. Faded in stripes along skirt. · Dior grey tulle - poor condition, in need of restoration. Tear to rayon inner corset, slight perspiration stains at underarms. Top layer of skirt tulle to front and sides is badly torn but back area of tulle is ok. Needs the top skirt layer of tulle replaced or restored.
A Liberty gold brocaded black satin opera cape, mid 1920s, large woven Liberty London label with MR (Mary Regina) intials, woven with large cabbage roses and scattered poppies, lined in gold satin, black fur collar CONDITION REPORT: Exterior is fresh and good, lame is good. Gold sateen lining is generally good in the main part of the cape but is badly stained and worn mainly around the hem area. There is an L shaped tear in the fur collar at the back but this is easily repairable.
A Madame Gres couture black taffeta evening cape with velvet collar, mid 1950s, labelled, lined in wool; together with a Pedro Rodriquez black satin evening cape lined in lilac silk (2) CONDITION REPORT: Mme Gres cape needs cleaning there is a white mark on the rear skirt (bird droppings?). Velvet facing inside the lapel needs tacking down inside (minor). Rodriquez - lining is faded in places and soiled inside neck edge, otherwise good.
A beaded and embroidered couture ivory chiffon bridal or presentation tunic-dress, circa 1928, adorned with couched love knots, rhinestones, floss silk and bugle beaded bands, bust approx 92cm, 36in; together with an ivory chiffon and silver lace edged trained with large pearl and silver beaded bow; and a quantity of lingerie c.1900-20 (qty) CONDITION REPORT: Dress: faint champagne stain to back right neck-bodice area, dress would have been worn with a silk underslip which is missing, embroidery and beading are good, slight tarnishing to love-knots on shoulders. Train: it is non-matching with the dress, though similar colours and dress has pres-studs to attach. Gold lace and pearl bead embroidery is generally good but numerous scattered small holes and 8x6cm L-shaped tear. Lingerie: fair/poor condition, silk nightie has tear at left underarm, matching knickers have a rip rear waist centre back, monogrammed split drawers have a few holes and repairs, lace trim has been removed from neck edge of bed cape.

A 1920s style bead work flapper dress, a fur cape, a similar fur cape, fans and other textiles (qty) Condition report Report by NG Dress only: Armpit to armpit - max. 48 cm. Several areas of missing bead/sequin work, notably to base of v-neck front. Some of lost beads and sequins attached to bottom of dress. Some other pulling and loss to top of each split front and back. Some holes forming below drop waistband at top of skirt where weight of beads pulling down. Losses to beads and sequins to both arm holes and some fraying. Poppers to back sewing together and presumably lining/backing cloth replaced.
