*Walter Reginald Hammond. Gloucestershire & England 1920-1951. Interesting three page handwritten letter from Hammond to his girlfriend Dorothy from the Royal Hotel, Durban on the M.C.C. tour of South Africa 1938-39. Excellent content ‘Well here we are, once again in Durban. It will not be long now before I shall be in Cape Town. I do hope that this last Test match is not going to last to long. I am going to endeavour to get the plane down the morning after the match finishes. So you will know how to expect me. I shall be travelling as Mr Jones so please keep it under your hat..... We have been very lucky with illness and injuries but they have all come with a rush. It is doubtful wether Paynter will be fit, I do hope he will be’. Nicely signed ‘Wal’. The letter undated but headed Wednesday. With original envelope dated 2nd March 1939, the day before the 5th Test began. G The 5th Test to which Hammond refers to, just happened to be the longest Test match ever and finished in a draw!, and would subsequently known as ‘The Timeless Test’. It started on the 3rd March and finished , still undecided on the 14th March when the tourists began a two day rail trip back to the Ship in Cape Town. It was the longest first class match ever played (10 days) and produced the highest aggregate (1981 runs). England’s 654-5 remains the highest 4th innings total in all first class cricket. Hammond made 140 in the England 2nd innings, Paynter played and made 62 & 75
