John Speed 1542-1629, Engraved Map- "Africa"; described, the manners of their Habits and buildinge, newly done into English by I. S. published at the charges of G. Humble Ano 1626. Abraham Goss sculpsit- delicately hand-coloured engraved map, text verso, vertical crease, generally good condition, at the top border are small views of Tanger; Ceuta; Alger; Alexandria; Alcair; Mozambique; & Canaria, at the left side are illustrations of the inhabitants: Marocchian; Senagensian; Marc: in Guinea; Cab: lepo Gonsalin Accolae; soul Congensis. On the right: Aegyptian; Abissinian; Mozambiquean; Madagascar; habi and the cape of good hope: together with other 18/19th century topographical engravings depicting Africa and others, (10) Note: This map is closely based on the 1619 and 1623 maps of Africa by Jodocus Hondius Jr. published separately in Amsterdam. Hondius text where in Latin but appear in English on Speed's maps. Like the two Hondius maps, the geography for Speed's map is copied from Willem Blaeu's folio-size map of 1617 which was based on a reduction of Blaeu's wall map of 1608. The geography for this map of Africa remained unchanged in all editions of Speed's Prospect from 1626 to 1676. There are three states of this map.
