Percy Billington (1910 - 2006) Landing at Gallipoli, April 25, 1915", the SS River landing troops at Clyde at V beach, Cape Helles, oil on canvas, 53 cm x 79 cm [On 25 April 1915 the SS River Clyde, commanded by Commander Edward Unwin, carrying 2,000 troops of 86th Brigade units of the 29th Division, beached V Beach in the vicinity of Sedd el Bahr castle, on the tip of the Gallipoli peninsula. Thus beached she came under the guns of the Ottoman Turkish defenders, resulting in heavy casualties as troops made multiple attempted to reach the beach. Six Victoria Crosses were subsequently awarded.]
