White Jacket; or, the World in a Man-of-War, 2 volumes, 1st edition, London: Richard Bentley, 1850, a few minor spots and pale stains, yellow endpapers and pastedowns with publisher's advertisements (front pastedowns and volume II rear pastedown with small adhesion residue and abrasions with resultant loss of lettering, very small shelf number and annotations to volume I front and rear pastedowns), original blue cloth, upper covers with square-rigged ship decoration in blind and anchor in blind to lower covers, spines (faded to green) lettered in gilt, small light stains to volume I upper cover, 8vo (Qty: 2)NOTESBAL 13661. Very scarce, only two copies sold at auction in the last 50 years in 2003 and 2006. Fine copy of the true first edition, preceeding the first American edition by two months and one of only 1,000 copies printed, The first American edition was published by Harper & Brothers, New York in an edition of 4524 copies, and a second issue, with cancel title-pages was published by Richard Bentley in a single volume in London in 1853. Melville's fifth novel, published a year before Moby Dick, drew on his experiences aboard the frigate USS United States from 1843-44, the title derived from the main character's coat which he had fashioned to withstand the rounding of Cape Horn. The novel, with its graphic depictions of the harshness of naval life and arbitrary use of flogging was very influential in the abolition of flogging as a punishment in the US navy by the US Congress in September 1850.

These include Black and White make Brown , an account of his journey in 1936 to the Cape Verde islands and Portuguese Guinea, and The Companion Guide to the South of France , covering the coastal region of France between Menton and the Spanish frontier. In the 1930s he landed in 'military intelligence' and became a member of Special Operations Executive in the Second World War. In the 1950s he stayed mostly in Italy and in a new career he became an actor in at least six Italian films. Fenwick A6. A scarce copy in the dust jacket. When Orwell's regular publisher Gollancz refused to publish it Frederick Warburg took it on and brought out the book in April 1938. The work records Orwell's time fighting with the Socialists in the Spanish Civil War and though little regarded at the time is now seen by many as one of the author's finest literary achievements.

Bright aqua long-sleeved jumpsuit with a diagonal design of nude netting and rhinestones across the bodice and down the sleeves and legs, bearing an interior label inscribed, 'Bob Mackie,' accompanied by a pair of silver calf-length boots trimmed in aqua and white ostrich feathers, bearing an interior label inscribed, 'Di Fabrizio / Los Angeles,' size unknown. This spectacular outfit was also worn by Mitzi during her 1978-79 stage tour and was originally paired with a matching full-length cape.

A Mitzi Gaynor pair of stage-worn gowns designed by Bob MackieComprising a white spaghetti strap leotard festooned with gold sequins in an asymmetrical striped pattern, with 2 large white sequined floral appliques at the bust and waist, with a long train of gold lamé ruffles, accompanied by a matching wide-brimmed hat of net, sequins, and matching floral appliques; together with a silver one-shoulder gown ornamented with mirrored sequins and silver and clear bugle beads in a wavy pattern, with an asymmetrical skirt of cream-colored ostrich feathers and a matching cape which joins at the shoulder by a large rhinestone brooch. Both costumes bear interior labels inscribed, 'Bob Mackie.' Both gowns were worn in Mitzi's live stage show tour in 1981 and in publicity photographs promoting the tour. Accompanied by 4 photos of Mitzi wearing the costumes and a souvenir program from Mitzi's stage tour.

A Mitzi Gaynor dress and coat, designed by Arnold ScaasiComprising a mid-length sleeveless gold floral damask dress with a scoop neck and a crinoline of satin and tulle underneath, bearing an interior label inscribed, 'Scaasi,' together with a matching cape lined in dramatic burgundy velvet, with deep front pockets and front button closures, with a matching interior label. Though it dates to 1958, Mitzi wore this elegant ensemble in publicity photographs outside her Beverly Hills home in 1965. She later loaned the outfit for a 1996-97 Scaasi retrospective in New York titled, 'Scaasi: The Joy of Dressing Up.' Scaasi and Mitzi had a long and fruitful business relationship; in fact, unlike other designers, Scaasi enjoyed collaborating directly with custom clientele on 'luxurious and dramatic garments that suited their lifestyles.' Accompanied by a photo of Mitzi modeling the ensemble.

Important Royal Naval Air Service, Armoured Cars, Photograph Albums, 1915-1918 & Post War, Gilbert G. Speight with Significant Gallipoli Interest. Outstanding Photograph Album titled and neatly captioned covering Sub Lieut. Gilbert George Speight's service first with the RNAS, Armoured Car unit. The Album illustrates his voyage via Malta to Gallipoli in 1915 and includes a large number of excellent images on the Peninsular, these include RNAS about to land, V Beach, Dug outs, Gun Crew, Indian Mule Transport, "My Dugout" marked with pencil cross, Landing at X Beach, Inside Dugout, Damaged Krupp Guns Cape Helles, RNAS Armoured Car in its Dugout, Leaving Gallipoli etc. Further images were taken on Lemnos and later at Alexandria. He obviously spends time at 19th General Hospital (Orwa-El-Wasra) and he has taken an excellent picture from a window showing Ambulances arriving. Now recovered there are some interesting images of his Armoured Car unit, together with photographs of trophies including "Turkish MG Tripod captured by RNAS". A later section illustrates the Armoured Cars Unit in action at Mersa Matrooh, including trenches, prisoners and "Burial of Col. Snow and 16 British Killed Jan. 1916". A particularly good sequence illustrates a "Desert Patrol" with Armoured Cars etc. (some 320 well captioned and generally very clear photographs in this Album alone) A second Photograph Album shows service back in the UK in Flight gear and with excellent images in the air etc. In addition two very unusual related documents "Certificate for Wounds and Hurts" describe narrow escapes he had while flying as an Observer from RNAS Newlyn in 1917 & 1918 in a seaplane. These detail the serious crashes and his injuries and are signed by the Pilot and Medical Officer. Both indicate that thankfully he was sober at the time of the crash! A further Post war Album traces his family and marriage and other documents and maps add up to a fascinating Collection. In summary three Albums, maps and ephemera.

A pair of late 18th century Derby soft paste porcelain companion figures, William Duesbury & Co., circa 1775, modelled as a male and female ballad singer, each in standing pose wearing a cape, with an arm raised holding a sheet of music in their hands and a hand on hip, on shaped naturalistic bases encrusted with flowers, patch marks to bases, female 21cm high, male 20cm high.
