Anon ROYAL TOUR 1947 BIRTHDAY BOOK A most rare and unusual souvenir of the Royal Tour to South Africa in 1947 by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and the two Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. On 18 April 1947 Mrs Mary E. S. Pillans of Rosedale, Rosebank, Cape Province sent this Shakespeare birthday book, bound in full leather to the Private Secretary to the King, requesting that the Royal family autograph her birthday book. This was a long established book with signatures of Cape Town notables including Field Marshal Lord Roberts. Amazingly, against all probable outcome, the whole Royal family entered their signatures against the date of their respective birthdays. Documents with the signatures of the whole Royal family during the Royal tour are ultra-rare and perhaps five such documents are known to exist. Little did the Royal family know that one of the signatures in the book was that of King Edward VIII as Prince of Wales when visiting South Africa in 1925! The book was duly returned by the King's Private Secretary, the Hon. S. Lascelles. This simple act illustrates the warmth and kindness shown to ordinary people during the Royal Tour of South Africa in 1947. Enclosed as part of the lot is the original letter from the King's private secretary in its original crested envelope. (2)
