Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting. Titled: "Lightning Rock " Dated: '86 Oil on Canvas. Signed and dated lower right. Overall Size: 42 x 54 in.In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "H.M.S. Resolution Near Alaska" Signed lower left. Oil on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Captain James Cook stamp issued in 1978. Cook's instruction on the third voyage was to seek a trade route to China and the East, one which would save European traders the long and dangerous trip around the Cape of Good Hope. The search for the Northwest Passage occupied most of 1778 and took Cook along the hazardous Alaskan coast. As his ships the H.M.S. Resolution and H.M.S. Discovery sailed farther and farther north, it became evident that the chances for discovering a navigable sea passage were very remote. Soon they were carefully threading their way around jagged ice floes. "We were at this time in 20 fathoms of water," wrote Cook in his journal in August, "... close to the edge of the ice which was as compact as a wall and seemed to be ten or twelve feet high at least. The Discovery being about a mile astern and to leeward found less water than we did and was obliged to tack for it. Our situation was now more and more critical, we were in shoald water upon a lee shore and the main body of the ice in sight to wind ward and driving down upon us." By his expert seamanship, Cook was able to sail free from danger. He was beaten by the ice. But, he was convinced, only for the time being. "My attention was now directed toward finding out some place where we could obtain wood and water, and in the considering of how I should spend the winter so as to return to the north in the ensuing summer." He chose Hawaii for winter quarters. A fateful decision, for there Cook met an untimely death in an incident with the natives. Image Size: 18.25 x 19.75 in. Overall Size: 21 x 23 in. Unframed. Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Two Giraffes" Signed lower left. Original Gouache painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Buzzards soar high above the savannah, searching for carrion. Seeking prey, a cheetah scans the horizon. Lions nap in the afternoon sun, while Cape buffalo seek the coolness of area water holes. Many animals live in Africa, but none more unique than the giraffe. Often called "the animal built by committee," the giraffe looks as if it was put together from spare parts. As ungainly as it may appear, the giraffe is nevertheless one of the most widespread, successful herbivores of the African plains. Its extremely long neck and forelegs allow the giraffe to access foliage beyond the reach of other mammals. It has a tongue that can extend 18 inches to gather food, and plate-sized hooves which it uses as weapons to defend its young. A kick from the front feet of a giraffe can quickly kill a lion. As humans can be identified from their fingerprints, so too, can the giraffe be distinguished by its coat -- each has its own unique pattern. While its senses of hearing and smell are highly developed, the giraffe's most acute sense is sight. Giraffes spend much of their time in the company of zebra, elands and wildebeests, with a mutual "lookout for danger" policy protecting all. With its keen eyesight and high vantage point, the giraffe is often the first to spot approaching danger. Usually only one calf is born to each cow. A giraffe calf at birth may stand six feet tall and weigh 130 pounds, nurses and runs within an hour of its birth. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 18 x 16 in. Unframed. (B13702)
