Manner of Richard Cosway Portrait miniature of a lady, possibly Lucy Savage Nassau, in a blue dress with white fichu and grey-black sashwatercolour on ivory, in an ornate gilt bronze and heavy brocade frame9cmProvenance: From the collection of Col. Vernon Hope-Johnstone; Bristol Antiques, Cape Town, South Africa, from whom acquired in 2009 as of 'Lucy Nassau, Countess of Rochford (née Younge)' for 6,000 R (£444)This composition appears to partly derive from an undated miniature by Richard Cosway which is identified as being of Lucy Nassau, the daughter of Edward Younge of Durnford in Wiltshire who married in 1742 William Henry Nassau de Zuylestein, 4th Earl of Rochford (1717-1781). However, she would have already been well into her 40s at the earliest time that Cosway could have painted the original. Therefore, it is more likely the sitter in the present miniature is instead Lucy Nassau (1752 - before 1830) the daughter of Richard Savage Nassau (brother of the 4th Earl) and of his wife Elizabeth Anne Spencer, widow of the 5th Earl of Hamilton. We are grateful to a member of the Nassau family for suggesting the likely identification of the sitter in the present miniature. This item is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018 and has been assigned an exemption certificate, Ref. No.H5WUDPNS.Believed to date from the late 19th century.

James Gillray, British 1756-1815- Doctor Sangrado curing John Bull of repletion - with the kind offices of young Clysterpipe & little Boney - a hint from Gil Blas; hand-coloured engraving on wove paper with narrow margins, Published 2 May 1803 by H. Humphrey, 27 St James' Street, 25.5 x 35.5 cm. (VAT charged on the hammer price). Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, Oxford, 30 June 2015, lot 239 (£1,250). Note: BM 9986. Prime minister Henry Addington (right) bleeds John Bull, who sits exhausted and faint, supported by foreign secretary Lord Hawkesbury. Addington stands tall, exclaiming 'Courage John Bull - Courage!!!' Hawkesbury, by contrast, is drooping and rather melancholy, repeating 'Courage Johnny.' Napoleon Bonaparte (right) holds out his hat to catch the blood that spurts from Bull's arm. The blood is inscribed 'West Indies', 'Cape of Good Hope', 'Malta', 'Ceylon'. A young boy, standing behind Addington holds out another hat, inscribed 'Clerk [of the] Pells', to catch a stream of blood inscribed '£3,000 Pr Annum'; and the boy echoes 'Courage'. On the left stand Whig politicians Charles James Fox and Richard Brinsley Sheridan proffering bowls of 'Warm Water'; both say 'Courage'. Bull sits on a commode inscribed 'Reservoir for the Clyster-pipe Family' (the Addingtons), and beside him lie his damaged hat and stick along with a torn paper: 'Rule Britannia, an old song'. In this satirical print, Gillray appears to represent the British nation being bled of resources by bad government policies and foreign powers. The enemy, Napoleon, stands to benefit from a weakened Great Britain.

Rowley, R.N.' and Gieves brass shield cartouche to the lid, the items belonged to Captain Henry Aubrey Rowley R.N., born in 1896, Henry Rowley joined the Royal Navy in 1909 at 13 years of age, he served throughout the First World War and fought at the Battle of Jutland in HMS Iron Duke, he then served on the minesweeper HMS Moon and finished the war on the Light Cruiser HMS Comus, being promoted Lieutenant in January 1918, he went on to be promoted Lieutenant Commander in 1926, Commander in 1931, and Captain in 1937, in December 1939 he took command of the Cruiser HMS Calypso, on 12th June 1940 Calypso was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian Submarine Alpino Bagnolini 50 miles South of Cape Lithion in Crete, in July 1940 Rowley was given command of the Cruiser HMS Gloucester and on 29th March 1941 fought with the 7th Cruiser Squadron at the Battle of Cape Matapan against the Italian Fleet, on 22nd May 1941 during the Battle of Crete, HMS Gloucester was attacked by German dive bombers of Stukageschwader 2 and hit by several bombs eventually sinking, of the 807 men on board only 85 survived to be picked up by the Germans, sadly, Captain Rowley was killed in action, he was later posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his service at the Battle of Cape Matapan and Mentioned in Despatches for the Battle of Crete, the citation, hand written on his Service Record reads, 'Awarded DSO, Captain Rowley was in command of HMS Gloucester at the Battle of Cape Matapan on 29th March 1941. By reason of the ships position relative to the smokescreen, HMS Gloucester bore the brunt of the fire from a Littoria class Battleship for some twenty minutes. He handled his ship throughout with coolness and good judgement and transmitted valuable reports. This is more commendable as considerable doubt existed as to Gloucesters ability to maintain high speed owing to a defective bearing which materialised two days before and had been rectified by ships staff the previous day and must have been the cause of great anxiety. Mentioned in Despatches for outstanding courage, fortitude and resolution in the Battle of Crete.', Captain Rowley is buried at the Alexandria Hadra War Cemetery in Egypt, the lot also includes an original photograph of this fine Naval Officer in full dress uniform as a Commander, wearing WW1 service medals, the items come direct from family

UNITED KINGDOM. Elizabeth II, 1952-2022. Gold half-sovereign, 2017. Royal Mint. Proof. Commemorating the 200 year anniversary of the modern sovereign 1817-2017, featuring the original design of St. George and the Dragon as made by Pistrucci.Crowned old head of Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait"). Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: Elizabeth II · DEI · G Design by Jody Clark. / The reverse depicts an illustration of the legend of St George as the slayer of the dragon, in its original 1817 interpretation. St George is on horseback, advancing to right, wearing a helmet and chlamys (cape, or cloak) fastened in front by a fibula, and holding a broken lance. His left hand clutches the rein of the horse's bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare. The saint's horse appears to be half attacking, half shrinking from the dragon, which lies wounded by George's spear and in the throes of death. The point of the lance is broken off in the dragon's side. In relief in the left part of the ground line, the artist's initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci). Surrounding the image, a Garter circlet inscribed with the Order of the Garter's motto, HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE · (from old French: Shame on he who thinks evil).
