Campaign Medals A Boer and Great War Group of eight Medals to Lieutenant Colonel William H Murphy, DSO, KPM, TD, Leinster Regiment, London Irish Regiment and Commandant Zanzibar Police, consisting of Distinguished Service Order, Kings Police medal, Kings South Africa medal with two clasps (South Africa 1901 & 1902), Queens South Africa medal with six clasps (Laings Nek, Relief of Ladysmith, Tugela Heights, Wittebergen, Transvaal, Cape Colony), Star Medal 1914-15, British War medal, Victory medal, and Territorial Decoration medal, presented in a modern glazed display case with a black and white photograph of the recipient, together with a portrait of William H Murphy in Regimental uniform, signed and dated 1945, watercolour London Gazette, 18.7.18, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst in command of the battalion, he reconnoitered the whole of the position and was continually in the front line, where his unfailing cheerfulness was an inspiration to all ranks. On the occasion of an attack, he successfully led his battalion in support at very short notice and in darkness. Later, he directed the withdrawal with remarkable skill, and on another occasion, when the outpost line held by his battalion, was attacked in large force by the enemy, and eventually pressed back, he re-established the line of posts and organised them into a defensive position, maintaining them until relieved. He displayed magnificent courage, leadership and ability."
