Burgess, the ship sank on the 4 December 1830 after crashing into the rocks at the base of Cabo Frio, north of Rio de Janeiro, because the captain relied on dead reckoning rather than taking soundings. Among its valuable cargo were silver bars, plates, coins and some gold. Twenty-eight lives were lost and subsequent storms broke the wreck up, spreading its cargo over the sea-bed. John Christian Scetky painted two paintings now in the National Maritime Museum in London, both depicting the salvaging of the treasure.
Rt Honble Horatio Nelson, Duke of Bronte in Naples, Baron Nelson, of the Nile … London: Hinton, Dec. 1, 1800. Framed, large size. Note: Le Quesne 1. This is the earliest of the Nelson glass pictures. Professor Le Quesne points out that, in terms of detail, it is also the most accurate representation of Nelson. The gold braid at this wrist is correct for his rank as Rear-Admiral of the Red at the time of publication. His decorations comprise medals for the Battles of Cape St. Vincent and for the Nile: those on his breast are the Turkish Order of the Crescent, the Order of the Bath and the Neapolitan Order of Ferdinand and Merit, with, in his hat, the chelengk presented to him by the Sultan of Turkey. The sword, in the form of crocodile, was presented to Nelson by his captains after the Battle of the Nile. Le Quesne records this as not being in the National Maritime Museum or the Royal Naval Museum.
