A cream white wool jacket embroidered in colourful crewel work, buttoned down the front with a toggle and double buttons, lined in white silk. 16" across the back. ADMIRAL A W ACLAND-HOOD MEMORABILIA. Two naval trunks with brass plates or labels denoting they are the property of Arthur William Acland-Hood RN. Both mid 19thC in origin, with the cap worn by Captain A W A Hood, in the Second Opium War. Whilst Captain of HMS Acorn a small Gunboat on the China Station. The old label inside the cap reads, 'To be taken great care of'. Cap worn by Captain Arthur William Acland Hood RN . (Afterwards Baron Hood of Avalon) In the China War in 1857. Complete with Victorian officers badge, also a Stohwasser & Winter of 39 Conduit Street, London W, label. With this lot is a part of an explosive device, it appears an early Chinese underwater 'Torpedo'. The label on the wooden block with nails and a brass wheeled device reads. ' Part of the Infernal machine which exploded within 20 yards of HMS Acorn , in the Canton River on May 3rd 1857. The machine contained two tons of powder and was guided under water by means of large rings shipped along a Bamboo cable & guided on each side of the river by men with guide lines concealed by the high banks, the Guard Boat was leaving HMS Acorn at 4:00 am and moving accidentally in the direction of the men guiding the machine. They fancied they were discovered and pulled the trigger line a moment too soon and no damage was done by the explosion. Arthur Hood who commanded the Acorn so wrote. (Just under 13" long 4" wide and 1.1/2" deep.) Silvered buttons with the Hood Crest, also Naval officers buttons. The smaller crested buttons are mostly on cards, all are a walking bird with anchor background, the sets and loose examples number around 200 in total. Also with this lot are two artefact's from Pompei in 1896, one with part of a mosaic the other in marble. Both have labels and dates of collection noted. Arthur William Acland Hood born 18/7/1824, in Bath Somerset. Died in Glastonbury (Butleigh) Somerset 16/11/1901, aged 77 years. Served in the Royal Navy from 1836 until 1889, retiring aged 65 years, as 1st Naval Lord. Took part in the Capture of Acre in November 1840, Lieutenant in January 1846. Served on the Cape of Good Hope in HMS Excellent. Served in the Crimea War including the Defence of Eupotoria in November 1854. Awarded the Order of Medjidie 5th Class. Served on the China Station in HMS Acorn from May 1856. Took part in the Battle of Fashtan Creek against the Junks in June 1857. Thence the Battle of Canton in December 1857. Promoted Captain in February 1858. Rear admiral 2nd Naval Lord March 1876. C in C Channel Squadron. 1st Naval Lord awarded KCB 1886. Retired aged 65 Baron Hood of Avalon 1889. He married in 1855 Fanny Henrietta MacLean, they had two daughters. A Brass Desk Plaque presented to his wife Lady Hood inset in an oak frame. Celebrating the launch by her, of HMS Trafalgar September 1887. With details of both tonnage and horse power etc. 8.1/2" x 6", with other lesser artefact's.
A WW11 MERCHANT NAVY CASUALTY GROUP A S S Observer (Liverpool) casualty group of four medals. Box of issue and condolence slip, named to Charles Milton Roberts. 1939/45-Atlantic-Africa-War Medals, all unnamed as issued. The son of Charles Henry and Mary Beatrice Roberts aged 20, of 18 Trinity Rd, Hoylake, Wirral, Cheshire. The box is addressed to the parent at the family home. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. The ship was lost on the 16/12/1942. She was Torpedoed Of Cape Sao Roque by the U 176, with the loss of 66 of her 81 Crew Members, under cargo. U 176 sunk 11 ships (53,000 Tons) prior to being sunk herself in May 1943, by the Cuban Navy .Her Commander Reiner Dierkson was posthumously awarded the German Cross in Gold (January 1944)
A BUCKINGHAMSHIRE YEOMANRY QSA WITH THREE BARS. A Queens South Africa Medal with bars Cape Colony-South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. Named to 25246 Cpl E Smeeton 38th Coy Imp Yeo. (High Wycombe) Part of the 10th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, the Bucks Yeomanry sent two contingents of 120 men at a time. A L/Cpl E Smeaton is listed as being accidentally wounded in the action at Wonderfontein 11th June 1901. On this day the Company had Pte Lucas KIA, L Sjt Gillham Wounded (Since Died). Privates Povey & Britwell slightly wounded, also Pte Healy injured.
QSA/KSA MEDALS TO THE WELSH REGIMENT. A Queens South Africa Medal with bar Cape Colony, with 'Ghost Dated' reverse. A Kings South Africa Medal with bars South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902. Both named to 421 Pte H Keirle Welsh Regt. Both medals and clasps confirmed by lists of 3rd Battalion Welsh Regiment 1899-1902.
A CMG-QSA-KSA GROUP OF THREE MEDALS TO THE APD. Companion of St Michael & St George, Queens South Africa Medal with bar Cape Colony, Kings South Africa bars 1901 & SA 1902. The latter two medals named to Col G H Moore-Lane CMG APD. The three mounted for wear and contained in a fitted Spinks case, with a buckle mount on the CMG. The ghost dating is very clear on the QSA reverse, both the latter two oficially named in slanting engraved capitals. A matching miniature group, also mounted for wear Colonel George Howard Moore-Lane was born on the 19th October 1844. Paymaster APD from 26/5/1879. Major APD from 26/5/1884 T/Staff Paymaster " 8/5/1889 Staff Paymaster " 1/4/1895 Chief Paymaster " 26/1/1901. Previous Service with 15 & 77 Regt Districts. The son of the late Thomas Moore-Lane of Madras India. Married 1875 Mary T de Courcy, daughter of Admiral M de Courcy RN. Left Southampton on the Persia on Saturday 9th April 1900 for service in South Africa. Mentioned in Despatches LG 10/9/1901 awarded the CMG.
A woven wool bodice circa 1900, embellished with a silver braided design, with a chiffon collar and trimmings (some damage), together with a good Victorian cape in black, with a design scrolled onto the tulle in silver and black beads, edged with chiffon and lined in cream satin (some damage to chiffon) (2)

Firstly from Dover - Cape Verde, St. Helena, Cape Town, Dar-es- Salaam, Zanzibar; Secondly from Southampton - Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban & return to Teneriffe & Funchal . . . (ends). * appears to be plenty of absorbing reading, e.g. 'My stable companion expressed annoyance when I turned up , as she had expected to travel single cabin' (Southampton); whilst at Durban - ' We chatted & Mrs. N. showed us some lovely snaps she took in England'; sold with an old unassociated & little used sketchbook.

An interesting inscribed Zulu darkwood snuff knobkerry, offset head, flattened on top and below, the haft nicely carved in relief with name “J.C. Rentzke. Cape Town March.22.1879” within shamrocks, and additional incised “Kambula Hill Zululand”, slightly flared. Good Condition with a good patina. Plate 33
South Africa mint and used collection including Cape of Good Hope Includes Cape triangulars 1d, 4d (4) and 1s (3) used, mainly cut into, 1d and 4d mint, latter with full margins, later to 5s used, 1d surcharge, 3 surcharge inverted, EVII to 5s used, Union GV to 10s used, 1927 2d block 6 including split 'd', 1933-1948 to 10s mint pairs, Voortrekker and other GVI commemoratives mint and used etc. L
A group of four Medals and a Silver wound Badge to The Coldstream Guards, a Q.S.A, three clasps (Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Belfast), a K.S.A. two clasps (S. Africa 01 and S. Africa 02) with WWI War & Victory medals, all named to 2345 Pte J. Fletcher, Coldstream Guards, with copy papers for both wars and confirmation of all medals. M.I.C. also indicates silver wound badge awarded (badge present but not confirmed by number on reverse), with cap and valise badges.
Norfolk Regiment Interest QSA bars Cape Colony, Ofs, Transvaal, also entitled to Rhodesia & South Africa 1901 (last bar loose on ribbon), Victorian Army LS & GC Medal, first named 15472 S. SERJT. MAJ. J. MAHON 53rd Coy. IMP. YEO and 1511 Sergt J. MAHON NORF R. John Mahon enlisted aged 18 in the 1/9th Foot 14-11-1870 at ?? and served until 1897. In various non campaign area, the LS & GC medal was his only entitlement. (Gibraltar, GB & East Indies). Married with five children he re enlisted 24.3.00 and served until Christmas Day 1901 when he was KIA at Tweefontein when 500 Imperial Yeomanrymen were attacked by 500 Boers under De Wet who crept up at night upon the Yeomen and completely overran them, capturing 240 prisoners and 20 wagons. Sadly 57 British were killed and 88 wounded. The Rhodesia and SAOI clasps were later issued (research confirms) sadly this Rhodesia clasp is missing. EF (2)
Nurses cape - WW2 era British Nurses cape decorated with cloth formation sign badges. Collected by Sister Evelyn Mary Fox, Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (Q.A.I.M.N.S), the standard issue navy blue cape has stitched to its inside a number of British cloth formation signs and shoulder title badges including combined operations (Army), combined operation (RN/RM), 44th Indian Airborne Division, No.5 Commando, 64th London Medium Regiment RA, 13th, 49th, 56th, 61st, 76th & 78th Infantry Divisions, Commando Brigades and shoulder titles from Royal West Kent, The Buffs, Grenadier Guards, Wiltshire and East Surrey. Also a formation sign for the Royal Nederland Brigade, plus many others. Accompanying the cape is a folder full of documents and photographs relating to Sister Fox's service with the Q.A.I.M.N.S. (approx 85 cloth insignia items).
