' In His Own Write ' - John Lennon ( The Beatles ) - autographed / signed first edition. London, Jonathan Cape, 1964. Hardcover. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in blue ballpoint ' To Diz, You're a great TURN, good God, from John Lennon ', with 'Lennon' struck through.  Lennon personally gifted and inscribed this book to Dizz Gillespie (not the trumpeter) when he visited Lennon's home, Kenwood, in Weybridge, Surrey. Brian Epstein had met Gillespie at a party in Los Angeles in 1964 during the Beatles second tour of the US and subsequently brought him back to London, where he signed him to NEMS as an aspiring actor and singer. In reality, Gillespie was his surreptitious partner. Epsten's homosexuality was not public knowledge, but an open secret among his inner circle - and something that Lennon occasionally badgered him about. The word ' turn ' in Lennon's inscription seems to be a case of clever wordplay, which could mean either a 'showman' or allude to 'turning a trick'. The relationship between Epstein and Gillespie quickly turned sour, with Gillespie attempting blackmail and becoming unpredictably violent. An incredibly unique piece, with a terrific association within the Beatles inner circle.  Provenance: ex-Christie's Dec. 4th 2006 auction. (From that original description: The vendor first met John Lennon and Brian Epstein in 1964 and was given this book by John Lennon when he visited him at his home, Kenwood, in Weybridge, Surrey.  Diz was the vendor's nickname') Supplied with a cutting from another auction catalogue, presumed more recent.

*An early Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Bronze awarded to Sailmaker James Sweetmore of the Queen Margaret, of London, who went out in the ship’s boat to rescue all nine crew of the Heatherbell, of Shields, who were in ‘imminent peril of their lives’ in high seas off the Cape of Good Hope. Having brought them safely aboard, they were later landed at St. Helena comprising: Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life, V.R., large bronze issue (James Sweetmore. Wreck of the “Heatherbell” 3rd. Janry. 1858); in original, blue velvet-line case of issue, with gilt embossed name to exterior, tiny nicks to rim in places, otherwise good extremely fine. The events of this incident were recorded in detail by the York Herald of Saturday 27 march, 1858, as follows: “LOSS OF A SHIELDS BRIG. The account of the loss of the brig Heather Bell, Captain Appleton, has just been received by her owners. It appears she sailed from Bird Island, one of the Guano Islands, on the south coast of Africa, on the 16th of December last, bound to Liverpool with a cargo of guan. All went well until the 29th, when she experiences some very heavy weather, the sea breaking over her and carrying all of the decks. The pumps were sounded, and it was found she was making nearly two inches of water in the hour, from a leak which was discovered to be in the after part of the vessel. Next day the gale increased, and she shipped a great number of seas, which nearly filled her cabin. This weather continued, and on the 3rd of January it was found the leak had increased, and they commenced to throw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. The course of the vessel was also changed, the captain wishing to make land. The pumps were tried again, but they were choked, and the crew had to resort to bailing to keep the water down. It was at last found impossible to save the ship, and signals of distress were hoisted. During the day a barque came in sight, and, seeing the signals, immediately hove to and sent her lifeboat to their assistance. The crew left the vessel, and shortly afterwards she disappeared. The barque is the Queen Margaret, of London. Captain Spence, crew, nine in number, were landed at St. Helena on the 21st of January.” The ship’s Mate, James Robb, was awarded a silver Board of Trade Medal, and the 5 other crew of the Queen Margaret were awarded bronze medals, as well as a £2 gratuity.

An Egyptian faience Shapti (of Horwedja), a priest of the goddess Neith, 30th dynasty (380 - 343BC), with striped wig and plaited beard, a hoe in the left hand and a mattock in the right with a grain basket hanging over the right shoulder on a rope, the body inscribed with hieroglyphics with a spell from chapter 6 book of the dead, the foot with contemporary waxed cotton label, 'Ushapti, from the tomb of Horwita, Egyptian noble about 600BC, see book pages 92 and 93', 23cm (9in) Provenance: Given as a gift to the current vendor from the archaeologist Raymond Inskeep (1926 - 2003) Other Notes: This particular Shapti was probably part of a collection of 399 found by Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie, FRS, FBA, commonly known as Flinders Petrie, in 1890 in the Faiyum region of Egypt, the tomb housed the best preserved and highest quality group of funerary figures known, much of the original colour has been lost due to water damage as the tomb was flooded. Examining other letters from 'Flinders Petrie', the hand writing on this label appears very similar and is thus most probably written in his hand. Raymond Inskeep came to archaeology later in life and after serving in the latter part of the Second World War in Egypt and Palestine, he developed a love of archaeology and later won a scholarship to St John's College Cambridge. After graduating, he went to Africa to study rock art sites in Tanzania, then he had a spell as assistant lecturer at Cambridge, then later took up a position in Cape Town as a lecturer in ethnology and archaeology (where he would stay for 12 years). His research and determination to properly organise South African archaeology made him one of the major figures in this field. In 1972 he settled in Oxford where he helped set up the Donald Baden-Powell Quaternary Research Centre and also worked at the Pitt Rivers museum.

Catalogue Entry: A rare collection of Paper Ladies made entirely from pieces of paper sculpted to form faces, bodies, clothing and accessories. These objects were made by Julia Norris who was married to the rector of Witney, Oxfordshire in ??? (date here). The Paper Ladies are meticulously sculpted and proportionate, exhibiting both the wonderful skillset of their maker and the craftsmanship of women during this period. Each Paper Lady is fashioned with full dress skirts, a cape, headcovering and accessories. Quote from Julia Norris' great grandson, David: "One talent she pursued with distinction. From a variety of papers prepared by long soaking she modelled her paper ladies fashioning their garments from another stock of papers kept dry and chosen for staying power. These figures were sold for charity and some bought by the Queen herself. The charity may have gained regal suppport from one of the rare moments of amusement or from the object's intrinsic merit of originality." Condition: The Paper Ladies are stored in two non-archival boxes and filled with some non-archival tissue to protect and help hold their form while stored. The paper used to make the Paper Ladies' is heavily acidified and demonstrates both some "foxing" and "browning" typical of the acidification of paper goods. There is considerable dust on the surface of each of them. They are in fair-poor condition as per Lucy Commoner's condition rating system. Albeit for textiles, her system applies to these paper objects. The Paper Ladies would benefit from the recommendations below. Recommendations: -surface cleaning -archival storage -preventive conservation steps should be taken to limit light and humidity -integrative pest control management should be put in place to protect them Report prepared by Tatiana Verdon
