Lady Dorothea Duff, nee Reynolds-Peyton. Logbook or journal, typed, recording a voyage from Port Lincoln, South Australia to London by way of Cape Horn, 1935, in the four-masted barque "Ponape". The daily entries, which run from 11 April 1935 to 17 August 1935, record the coordinates (latitude and longitude), weather, and various occurrences on board. The evocative descriptions reveal Dorothea's adventurous spirit. April 25th: 'This evening just before it got dark, I climbed out on to the end of the jibboom with the 2nd Officer, and I saw and patted the figure head. It was fun. The ship was moving along quite fast, and when we were on the end of the jibboom it looked as though we were quite separate from the Ship, and as if she was following us.' April 28th: 'This morning at about 12.30 I and the Mate (King Kong) climbed the rigging of the Main mast and went out on the Royal Yard Arm. It was quite exciting as it was fairly windy and the upper part of the rigging swayed about a bit...we looked down at the sea and saw some porpoises swimming under the surface...they looked very funny and quite small from the height we were at. They looked like fish on a Lalique glass plate.' April 30th: 'At 10 P.M. we had a rum grog with the Captain. He gave me what he calls a 2nd Mate's drink, which is about 4 times as strong as an ordinary one, but I knocked it back for the honour of the Union Jack.' 152 pages, typed, on paper bearing manufacturer's watermark (Abermill Bond), bound in olive green paper covers bearing engraved bookplate for Dorothea Duff (depicting sailing ship), the pages sewn with silk cords and a tied luggage tag, inscribed in black ink, 'First Diary, from Australia to England 1935.'
