COHEN MORRIS: (1887-1970) British-Canadian Adventurer, aide-de-camp to Sun Yat-sen and a Major-General in the Chinese National Revolutionary Army. Rare book signed, a hardback edition of Two-Gun Cohen by Charles Drage, published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1954 (second impression). Signed in bold black fountain pen ink by Cohen to the front free endpaper, also adding some Chinese characters and with a small square red stamp alongside, further signed by Charles Drage in black fountain pen ink above, adding the date 9th December 1954 in his hand. Bound in red cloth (spine faded) and lacking the dust jacket. About VG Cohen's life story is an interesting one - he arrived in China in 1922 and trained Sun Yat-sen's small armed forces to box and shoot, and he soon became one of Sun's main protectors, accompanying the Chinese leader to war zones and conferences. Cohen carried two guns with him and the western community were intrigued by Sun's gun-toting protector and began calling him 'Two-Gun Cohen', a name which stuck, hence the title of the present biography. When the Japanese invaded China in 1937 Cohen joined the fight and undertook some tasks for the British Intelligence Agency, Special Operations Executive (SOE). Cohen was in Hong Kong when the Japanese attacked in December 1941 and, on the fall of Hong Kong, the Japanese imprisoned Cohen in Stanley Prison Camp. He was not released until late 1943 as part of a rare prisoner exchange.

LATROBE CHRISTIAN IGNATIUS: (1758-1836) English Clergyman of the Moravian Church, Artist, Musician & Composer. Through his six volume Selection of Sacred Music (1806-26) Latrobe was responsible for introducing the music of Haydn, Mozart and other continental European composers to English audiences. A.L.S., C. I. Latrobe, two pages, 4to, London, 24th December 1810, to 'Dear Madam' [Barbara Ann Wilberforce]. Latrobe requests that, as Mr. Wilberforce is sometimes overwhelmed with letters, his correspondent mentions to Wilberforce that he has 'received today a very satisfactory official answer to my letter to Earl Bathurst respecting the Cape Missionary Establishments of the United Brethren, and would not trouble him to speak to his Lordship, as he kindly proposed doing, on our behalf'. Latrobe continues to remark that, without his knowledge, his petition had been attended to 'and directions sent to Sir John Craddock (sic) to put our claim to the possession of the lands granted at Bavians-kloof….' adding that this is all he wished for 'and permanency of possession is to us no farther an object, than that it secures to our Hottentot Congregations those advantages which they derive from being formed into a Christian community'. Latrobe also remarks that the letter received from Lord Bathurst's office is 'the most acceptable Christmas box ever given me as it reports security to our worthy missionaries and their flocks at the Cape' and concludes 'Now tho' the enemies may grin, they dare not bite, and will, as at the beginning, get leisure to discover, that the mission, instead of injuring, will be of advantage to them, and become its friends'. Some heavy traces of former mounting to two edges of the letter, slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature, and some light age toning and a few small tears, G Barbara Ann Wilberforce (1777-1847) English Spouse of the abolitionist William Wilberforce. Henry Bathurst (1762-1834) 3rd Earl Bathurst. English Politician, President of the Board of Trade 1807-12, Foreign Secretary 1809 and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies 1812-27. Although not an abolitionist, Bathurst was a friend of William Wilberforce and pressed his Colonial Governors to improve the living conditions of slaves. Sir John Cradock (1759-1839) 1st Baron Howden. British Politician and General, Governor of the Cape Colony 1811-14.  As a promoter of the missionary activity of the Moravian Church Latrobe journeyed to the Cape of Good Hope to visit the Moravian mission stations and described his time there in Journal of a Visit to South Africa in 1815 and 1816: With Some Account of the Missionary Settlements of the United Brethren, Near the Cape of Good Hope, which he also illustrated.

[BOER WAR]: HELY-HUTCHINSON WALTER (1849-1913) Anglo-Irish Diplomat & Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1893-1901 and Governor of Cape Colony 1901-10. An interesting A.L.S., Walter Hely-Hutchinson, four pages, 8vo, Natal, 8th November 1899, to Murray, on the printed stationery of Government House. Hely-Hutchinson thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I have just repeated Royston's pigeon post message to you. Reuter says the Boers caught his messenger; and a telegram has just come in from Pretoria with practically the same list of wounded', further continuing 'Tugela Ferry reports hearing about 8 shots this morning in Umbulwana direction; firing then ceased. I wonder whether our four inch gun has got to work & silenced them? They seem very cheery at Ladysmith…..If old Joubert keeps hanging on to Ladysmith, things will come all right soon'. In a postscript Hely-Hutchinson writes 'Please say to your Corps how much I value their patriotic service: & that I intend to make the corps the subject of a special report to the G[overnor] G[eneral]'. Some light creasing and a couple of minor stains, G

[CAPE OF GOOD HOPE - BATTLE OF CONGELLA]: CHAMBERS COURTNEY (d.1848) British Lieutenant-Colonel who served at the Battle of Waterloo under the Duke of Wellington and later Commanded the 25th Regiment of Foot at the Cape of Good Hope. A.L.S., C Chambers, three pages, folio, Cape Town, 10th August 1842, to [Abraham Josias] Cloete. Chambers states 'It occurred to me a few days ago that from your having had 400 of the 25th Regiment under your command at Natal you might probably wish to have my opinion upon the measures you carried into effect when employ'd upon a service of no ordinary nature, but one that required as much discretion and sound sense as any that ever perhaps agitated the minds of the Colonists at the Cape - English and Dutch' and continues to inform Cloete that, having considered the matter with close attention, he is 'quite satisfied that the course you pursued was not only the best, but the only judicious right and just one', further remarking 'I cannot understand the motives or views of those who have manifested so much hostility to your proceedings'. In a postscript Chambers also adds 'Major D'Urban who was with you fully concurs in my opinion and indeed so do all the officers of the Regiment whose age and experience enable them to form a correct judgement'. A letter of good content written a few months after the Battle of Congella. VG Abraham Josias Cloete (1794-1886) Afrikaner General in the British Army. In 1842 Cloete was sent with reinforcements from Cape Town to relieve a small force under Captain Thomas C. Smith of the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot which was besieged by insurgent Boers near Port Natal (now Durban). Cloete's firm action not only avoided a battle but pathed the way for a permanent settlement of the subsequent Natal Colony. He later served as Quartermaster-General in the Xhosa Wars of 1846. Benjamin D'Urban (1777-1849) British Lieutenant-General and Colonial Administrator, Governor of the Cape Colony 1834-38. Durban in South Africa is named after him.

MAITLAND PEREGRINE: (1777-1854) British General who fought in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, later a Colonial Administrator serving as Governor of the Cape Colony 1844-47. An interesting A.L.S., P Maitland, four pages, 4to, Romney, Hampshire, 1st January 1848, to [Abraham Josias] Cloete. Maitland states that he is obliged to his correspondent for their letter 'and Sir H. Pottinger's proclamation against Sandille' and continues to explain that he has made use of the document in a letter to Lord Grey 'who has been pleased to affirm on the faith of Sir H. Pottinger's despatches, that I have made much too favourable representations of affairs in Kafirland, and conveyed to him very erroneous information on that subject' further reflecting 'Hence, I suppose arises one difficulty that stands in the way of my getting anything done for the officers I recommended by the Duke of Wellington's permission, for some mark of Her Majesty's favour', explaining 'Three or four times have I written, and three or four times I have seen Fitzroy Somerset on this subject, but still nothing has been done. I thought some demur might arise from the notion that to confer honours or promotion on the officers immediately under me, while I was passed over, might be considered as casting a shade on my conduct, and to obviate this, I assured Fitzroy Somerset, that I desired nothing for myself. Still nothing has been done'. Maitland further makes reference to the Cape Colony, 'The accounts I have seen from the Cape have seemed to me highly corroborative of my position that British Kafirland was virtually subjugated. If the Savages can't be provoked into any fresh hostilities after the lapse of nine months but submit to the marching of the troops through their fastnesses without attempting retaliation on the Colony, it is clear they have had enough of War and had already given in. In my despatch from Block Drifts…..I said “They are now fully convinced that though they may elude us in the bush for a time, and plunder the Colony in small parties with some success, yet when we encamp in their Country and scour it, they cannot hold out but must starve or submit.” I seem to have had said this truly of them, with the exception of Landilli and his few followers…..' A letter of good content. Two extremely small, very minor tears to the lower edges, otherwise EX Abraham Josias Cloete (1794-1886) Afrikaner General in the British Army.

CETSHWAYO: (c.1826-1884) King of the Zulu Kingdom 1873-79 and its leader through the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Cetshwayo famously led the Zulu nation to victory against the British in the Battle of Isandlwana in January 1879. Attractively matted in ivory with decorative borders beneath a colour reproduction image of a painting of Cetshwayo by Karl Rudolf Sohn and framed and glazed in a modern wooden frame to an overall size of 11.5 x 13.5. Together with a large portion of a 12mo envelope which originally contained the signature, annotated in fountain pen ink 'Cetywayo's signature…..Given by Col. Hassard'. Autographs of Cetshwayo are extremely rare in any form. One very small, extremely minor stain just above one letter of the signature, VGColonel Charles Fairfax Hassard (1822-1900) British Army officer who commanded the Royal Engineers in South Africa and served as second in command to Frederic Thesiger, 2nd Baron Chelmsford, during the Anglo-Zulu War. Hassard was Cetshwayo's gaoler when the Zulu chief was held captive at Cape Town. The signature was sold by Sotheby's in their sale of the Rawlins collection on 2nd, 3rd & 4th June 1980 (lot 298, Estimate £100-150, Hammer price £180) and has not appeared on the market since. Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting. Titled: "Shaman's Doll" Dated: '94 Oil on Canvas. Titled and signed verso. Having gallery label verso. In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Student's League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of '71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces, one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness, landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974, Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Herald of the Morning" Oil on masonite painting. This stately ship could haul 1,600 tons of cargo, and was described as a perfect gem in hull and rigging, not unlike a long, light-heeled privateer. The Herald of the Morning boasted clear and roomy decks, and had two fancy brass cannons mounted on her poop deck that added to her bold fighting appearance. During her 20-year career she made 18 westward passages around Cape Horn. Weighing nearly 1,300 tons and measuring 203 feet from bow to stern, the Herald of the Morning was launched in 1853 and soon made her mark as one of the world's fastest sailing ships. On her maiden voyage in 1855, she sailed from Boston to San Francisco in just 100 days, the fastest passage of any ship that year. Size: 25.5 x 26 in. Unframed.

John Lennon, In His Own Write, Jonathan Cape 30 Bedford Square London, early edition, signed by John Lennon to the opening page in blue ink, the opposing side inscribed in another hand 'Foyles Luncheon, Dorchester Hotel 23rd April 1964'. Note: This whimsical book of surrealist poems, drawings and short stories was the first solo endeavour by any of The Beatles. Originally published in March 1964, it was a huge success – reportedly selling 50,000 copies on the first day of its release in England. To celebrate the books success, Lennon was invited to a literary luncheon hosted by Foyle’s at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in London, for which he took a break from filming A Hard Day’s Night. Also in attendance were the Earl of Arran, Arthur Askey, Harry Secombe, Mary Quant, Helen Shapiro and a crowd of press people amongst others. Unfortunately, Lennon was not aware that he was expected to make a speech or that the event was anything more than a casual lunch; and according to his wife Cynthia they were both painfully hungover. When the moment arrived, with the press and attendees waiting with bated breath to hear from the ‘intelligent’ Beatle, a terrified John Lennon stood and said "Er, thank you all very much, and God bless you." Apparently the disappointment was palpable and it was seen as a typical Lennon snub of the establishment, but he tried to make up for it by signing copies of his book – including this volume for a relative of the current vendor who was in attendance.
