A pair of good Chinese blue and white ovoid jars and covers, 19th century, nicely painted with ladies in boats and picking lotus flowers from the lake while the emperor looks on with pleasure beside his attendants and officials in a pavilion, the cover nicely decorated with a lady and boy, the base inscribed with double circle, 37cm high, with wood stands (4)Provenance: Collection of a private lady in MalboroughCompare with a large Famille Rose basin with a similar design, 18th century, sold at Sotheby's London, Lot 100, 7th November, 2018. And a basin painted with a similar subject, late Kangxi, is illustrated by C.J.A. Jorg in Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, no.174, p.159. The theme of beautiful lady picking lotus flowers from a lake was popular with poets, playwrights and artists in imperial China as an activity representing hedonistic pleasure at court. This stems from the story of King Fuchai of Wu (r. 495-473 BC) and his infatuation with the legendary beauty and femme fatale Xi Shi who plucked lotus on the lake. The King was so bewitched by her beauty that he neglected affairs of state, and his kingdom collapsed. 清十九世紀 青花採蓮圖罐一對拍品來源:英國Malborough市私人女士珍藏 Condition Report: both jars with minor scratches on the surfaceone jar with one firing crack to the rimthe other jar with two small firing cracks to the rim, and chips to the foot rim Condition Report Disclaimer
