[HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. A pale and dark brown mottled marble ashtray, created in the aftermath of World War II from a substantial piece of marble believed to have originated from Adolf Hitler's desk within the Reichs Chancellery. The ashtray measuring approximately 6 x 5 x 2 inches, with roughly cut edges and a smooth polished top with three small grooves for cigarettes at the edges and an oblong basin to retain the ash at the centre. A black ink annotation to the base indicates that the ashtray was removed by a senior British Army officer from the Reichs Chancellery in Berlin in 1945. VG   Marble was undoubtedly one of Adolf Hitler's favoured materials for use with interior design; the interior of the reception room of the Reichs Chancellery featured massive brown marble columns, designed in collaboration with Gerdy Troost and erected in the refurbished building when Hitler assumed power.   A number of marble relics have survived from the time of the Third Reich, although few quite as substantial as the present ashtray. Pieces of marble from Hitler's writing desk, of an identical colour to the present ashtray, were made into paperweights by Lord Balfour after a visit to the Fuhrer's office following his death at the end of World War II. In 2009, the Daily Telegraph published an article based on an interview with Joy Hunter, a member of the elite secretariat who accompanied Winston Churchill to Berlin in July 1945 for the Potsdam Conference. The newspaper wrote that Hunter, whilst being interviewed, produced 'two lumps….of brownish marble' which she revealed were 'chunks of Hitler's desk that we found in the Chancellery', adding 'Everything was in ruins. I'm not sure whether we should have taken souvenirs, but we all had a piece'.

Lot 300

HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. A bold, dark fountain pen ink signature (‘A Hitler’) and date, 1st January 1939, in his hand to the verso of a folding oblong 12mo stiff light brown card, evidently a place card used at the Fuhrer’s personal New Year’s Eve party, featuring an original pen and ink illustration, heightened in watercolour, by Hitler to the inside opposite his signature, the charming image depicting a cherub seated on a cushion as they look into a mirror, with various bottles of lotion and perfume within reach, the recto bearing the red ink name Frau Esser. An extremely rare form of Adolf Hitler’s signature enhanced by a wonderful original illustration and an interesting association. Neatly inlaid, about EX   Hermann Esser (1900-1981) German Journalist and the de facto deputy of Adolf Hitler in the early stages of the Nazi Party (NSDAP). Esser had married Therese Deininger in Munich on 5th July 1923, one of his groomsmen at the ceremony was Adolf Hitler.   Adolf Hitler celebrated New Year’s Eve with a party at his Berghof residence near Berchtesgaden on 31st December 1938, signing the present place card soon after midnight. The menu for the dinner included broth, sprats or eggs, vegetables and salad and, following the formal congratulations from the guests and his staff, the Fuhrer participated in an ancient Teutonic ceremony in which molten lead was poured into a small basin of water and the shape it assumed supposedly determined the future.
