Louis Oscar Griffith (American/Indiana, 1875-1956, active New Orleans, 1916-1917), "Noon", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, titled and signed on "Joseph Sartor Galleries, Dallas" label en verso, 10 in. x 14 in., glazed and framed. Note: During his time in New Orleans in the winter of 1916-17, Louis Oscar Griffith painted an important series of vibrant impressionistic views of life on the New Basin Canal. Brilliantly rendered, these paintings are studies in the plein-aire effects of winter light reflected off water. The work offered here, Noon, is painted with the richly saturated palette indicative of the full sun of midday. A beautiful example of American Impressionism, this composition demonstrates Griffith`s fondness for depicting the historic waterway that once traversed the city of New Orleans.
JOHNSTON H H The River Congo - from its Mouth to Bolobo 220 x 150 Work by noted empire-builder, explorer and administrator, who says this work is not intended as a narrative of great pioneering exploration, this having been done by others before him such as Stanley, nor of scientific research, the author not being qualified to do so, but rather a guide-book for would-be travellers to the region. Much on the tribes of the Western Congo basin. 470 pp with numerous text illustrations and engraved plates and two maps - all present. Good condition in contemporary half calf with marbled-paper covered boards. Very slight foxing in prelims, otherwise nice, clean copy. The map has been expertly repaired along some folds, and there are a fe insignificant marginal tears on 5 pages.
