‡ NINA HAMNETT (Welsh 1890-1956) pencil - entitled verso, 'Life Class', signed with initials, dated verso c.1920, 44 x 28cmsProvenance: private collection West MidlandsAuctioneer's Note: born Tenby, studied at the Pelham Art School and the London School of Art between 1906 and 1910. Then launched herself into the London art world on the strength of a fifty pound advance on an inheritance from her uncle and a stipend of two shillings and sixpence a week from her aunts. She socialised with the likes of Augustus John, Walter Sickert, and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. She became very popular as a result of her high spirits, her devil-may-care attitude, and her sexual promiscuity. Like other women at the time revelling in a newfound independence, she had her hair cut short in a ‘crophead’ style (what we would now call a basin cut) and she wore eccentric clothing: It was said that at this phase in her life Nina Hamnett had the knack of being in the right place at the right time. In 1914 she went to live in Montparnasse, Paris, immediately meeting on her first night there the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. He introduced her to Picasso, Serge Dighilev, and Jean Cocteau, and she went to live at the famous artist’s residence of La Ruche which housed many other Bohemian artists and modernist writers. It was there that she met the Norwegian artist Roald Kristian, who became her first husband. Rapidly she established herself as a flamboyant and unconventional figure - bisexual, drank heavily, and had liaisons with many other artists in Bohemian society, often modelling for them as a way of earning a (precarious) living. She established her reputation as ‘The Queen of Bohemia’ by such antics as dancing nude on a cafe table amongst her drinking friends. Her reputation as a Bohemian and an artist eventually filtered back to London, where she returned to join Roger Fry and his circle working on the application of modernist design principles to fabrics, furniture, clothes, and household objects as part of the Omega Workshops. She acted as a model for the clothes along with Mary Hutchinson, Clive Bell‘s mistress, and she mingled with other members of the Bloomsbury Group, such as Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. Her paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Salon d’Automne in Paris. She also taught at the Westminster Technical Institute in London. Around this time she divorced her first husband and lived with the composer and fellow alcoholic E.J. Moeran. During the 1920s (and for the rest of her life) she made the area in central London known as Fitzrovia her home and stomping ground. This new locale for arty-Bohemia was centred on the Fitzroy Tavern in Charlotte Street which she frequented along with fellow Welsh artists Augustus John and Dylan Thomas, making occasional excursions across Oxford Street to the Gargoyle Club in Soho.After the glamorous world of modernism and the artistic avant-garde, there was a no less spectacular descent into poverty, squalor, and alcoholism, living in a bed-sit in Howland Street, infested with lice and littered with rodent droppings. It was said that the flat was furnished only with a broken-down chair, a piece of string for a clothes line, and newspapers instead of proper bedding. In 1932 she published a volume of memoirs entitled 'Laughing Torso', which was a best-seller in both the UK and the USA. Following its publication she was sued by Aleister Crowley, whom she had accused of practising black magic. The ensuing trial caused a sensation which helped sales of the book, and Crowley lost his case.Her success in this instance only fuelled her downward spiral, and she spent the last three decades of her life propping up the bar of the Fitzroy trading anecdotes of her glory years for free drinks. She took little interest in personal hygiene, was incontinent in public, and vomited into her handbag. Her ending was as spectacular as had been her previous life. Drunk one night she either fell or jumped from the window of her flat and was impaled on the railing spikes below. A Group of Important Works - To be Sold Without ReserveAn intact Raqqa ware pottery basin,Near East, 13th century,On a foot with recessed base, the body with slightly tapering sides opening out to a wide rim, the body decorated under a dark turquoise glaze in black with diagonal bands, 11.3cm. highProvenance: Ferri, Drouot Richelieu, Paris, 5th December 2008, Lot 364 (part lot).Condition Report: Under U. V light this lot renders colours of khaki for the iridescent areas, dark blue verging on black for the glaze and deep ochre for the paste. The only noticeable variation is seen on the foot were a trace renders a whitish colour running along the base of the body perhaps suggesting a skillful repair and restoration. However, the craquelure of the glaze is even overall, and so is the iridescence and the external glaze drips not showing any unexpected irregularities would contradict any breaks or repairs to the base or body of this work. The fritted straight foot is not levelled and may have been ground in part. This lot is in a condition consistent with its age.

A Royal Worcester "Pekin" pattern part dinner / tea / coffee set comprising teapot, milk jug, cream jug, sugar basin and slop bowl, nine tea cups, ten saucers, five coffee cans, three similar coffee cans, seven saucers and three smaller saucers, three sandwich plates, ten side plates, eleven shaped larger plates, one circular larger plate, three oval serving dishes, a shaped square serving plate, mainly 1920s, together with a pair of onion-shaped vases, date marked for 1912, 16.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS The tea plates and saucers - nearly all have all over significant crazing as does the sugar bowl. The medium size plates - four have significant chips to the rims, the others have some small chips. All items have areas of wear, knife marks etc to the patterns. One of the lozenge shaped serving dishes - the base is off but present. The coffee cans - all have significant crazing. The teapot has discolouration to the interior and s a chip to the spout. The small sugar bowl has a significant hairline fracture to the base. The tea cups have crazing, some discolouration and large scratches to the interior. All items have clearly been used and have wear and tear conducive with such to include surface scratching, wear to the pattern, some small chips and crazing - see images for examples

A creamware butter tub and cover from the Reverend William Nelson service, circa 1806-08Of plain circular shape with a button finial and on a fixed stand, decorated with a neat keyfret border in red enamel and gold, the cover painted with two crests of Nelson's chelengk and the stern of the San Josef, surmounted by an earl's coronet, 15.8cm diam (2)Footnotes:The Reverend William Nelson appears to have commissioned an extensive service to celebrate his inherited title of 1st Earl Nelson. In contrast to the bright Japan pattern chosen by his late brother and Emma, William elected for a set with a simple classical keyfret border in red and gold. Two principal sets of this pattern were made for William Nelson. One was a tea set using Coalport porcelain, the other a breakfast and supper service in creamware, some pieces bearing the impressed mark of Wilson. Both sets will have been decorated outside of the manufactories. The creamware breakfast service passed to Earl Nelson's daughter, Charlotte, and part of this was included as lot 41 in Viscount Bridport's sale at Christie's in 1895. No butter tubs were mentioned, but the set in the auction did include a large jug and a basin and the catalogue noted that the jug was signed Absolon, Yarm'th'. William Absolon was a retailer and china-decorator based in Yarmouth. An unsigned dish in the Nelson-Ward Collection in the National Maritime Museum combines the same keyfret border with a painting of a church that is certainly in the manner of Absolon. Perhaps William Nelson asked his local china shop in Yarmouth to match the border design of a Coalport service made for him in London. An annotated catalogue records that lot 41 in Lord Bridport's sale was bought, for £28.7s, by a customer named 'Ward'. It thus entered the Nelson-Ward collection, perhaps joining other pieces already there. An oval butter tub from the creamware service, although with a different shape of finial, is now in Greenwich and came from the Nelson-Ward Collection, no.AAA4657.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

According to the terms of Nelson's will, Emma had inherited most of the household china, including the Horatia, Nelson and Baltic sets. The list of items in the 'Nelson Set' included a Dessert Service and a 'tea service', although this should more-correctly have been listed as a Breakfast Set. The set didn't include any teapot, but two bowls were present along with a sugar basin and a cream ewer. Curiously, the 1813 inventory lists '24 Cups and 13 Saucers', which has to be a mistake. More than thirteen saucers from the set survive today. It is impossible to believe that eleven saucers had been broken prior to 1813, and the only logical explanation is that whoever drew up the inventory meant to write '24 Cups and 23 Saucers'. One saucer had probably been broken, not eleven of them.Unfortunately, Emma's financial problems meant that she had to part with almost everything in return for loans. Much of Emma's china had been packed into crates and stored in Samuel Trickey's warehouse under instructions from Alderman J J Smith who kept her possessions as surety against money he had advanced to bail Emma out of debtor's prison. These crates were stored by Smith until at least 1831. Emma's daughter, Horatia and her husband had attempted to reclaim what she felt was hers by right, and their correspondence with Alderman Smith mentions 'the service you are anxious to possess with the arms of Nelson' (Prentice, p.22). Alderman Smith did, apparently return items to different members of Nelson's family, probably in exchange for money. Anything that Smith had not distributed was sold when he died in 1844. It is likely that the 'Nelson Set Tea Service' was passed from Alderman Smith to Nelson's niece, Charlotte, Duchess of Bronte, who had married Samuel Hood, Baron Bridport. On his death in 1868 his Nelson relics passed to their son, Alexander Nelson, Viscount Bridport. Thus, what remained of this set was sold in Lord Bridport's sale at Christie's on 11 July 1895. A contemporary newspaper cutting attached to the back of this saucer by Wentworth Wass discusses the sale of this tea service, catalogued in 1895 as of Bristol porcelain but believed by 'enthusiastic collectors' to be of Worcester Pottery. The Bridport auction included a large part of the Nelson tea set and part of the Baltic set. In the Christie's sale ten pairs of breakfast cups and saucers sold for between 20 guineas and 36 guineas per pair. The present cup and saucer, together with the following lot, comprised one of these pairs, purchased at the sale by Charles Wentworth Wass. An annotated copy of the Bridport sale catalogue, shows that Wass was the buyer of lot 43, one pair of cups and saucers, for £37.16s. One of these cups and saucers is illustrated with a selection of Nelson China from the Wentworth Wass collection in Beresford and Wilson, Nelson and his Times (circa 1899), p.156. Both were then exhibited as part of the Wentworth Wass Collection at Thomas Goode's in South Audley Street in 1898, cat. no.61.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Only one of the original two basins was included in the Bridport sale, and this suggests the other bowl had, by this time, been broken.At the time of the Bridport sale, the Nelson breakfast set was believed to be Champion's Bristol porcelain (even though the Bristol factory had closed in 1780). A Chinese blue and white large circular basin, Qianlong, the interior painted with numerous pavilions in a mountainous landscape, the exterior with flowering branches, 55cm diameter, 20.5cm highHole drilled at the side of the basin, possibly contemporary to manufacture and filled with a cork stopper. There are a series of glaze scratches including one long stained crack to the interior, some typical wear and scratching to glaze, but overall in good order.
