They were used in conjunction with a he or a yi to form a set of vessels for the washing of hands. Such vessels would have been included in the ritual vessel sets used to perform ritual food and wine offerings to the ancestors.The crisply cast high relief bands of coiled interlocking dragons are very similar to those seen on a ritual bronze Hu vessel sold by Sotheby's, New York, 'Fine Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art', 11-12 September 2012, Lot 168 and on a fou, in the Sackler collection, illustrated by Jenny So, Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, vol. III, Washington, D.C., 1995, p. 206, no. 31. Other bronze ritual vessels with similar band decoration can also be found on a ding, attributed to the early Spring and Autumn period, in the Yantai City Museum, Shandong province, illustrated in Zhongguo qingtongqi quanji, vol. 9, Beijing, 1997, pl. 2, and on another lei, in the Hebei Provincial Museum, included ibid., pl. 128.

A Chinese silver three piece tea set, the tapered cylindrical teapot set with prunus blossom and bird applied decoration, the handle is in the form of a piece of bamboo with matching milk jug and twin-handled sugar bowl, 15.5 cm high, total approx 35.5 oz CONDITION REPORTS Teapot - hinge very stiff andf slightly buckled out of shape. Light scratches and discolouration throughout. The base appears to have pushed inwards. There is a dark mark to the base suggesting possibly a split with corresponding mark to the interior. The sugar basin and the cream jug handles differ in soldering to the body suggesting possibly the handle has been resoldered on the cream jug. Both items have various light scratches, the cream jug lip has been dented. All items slight knocks, scratches and general small signs of wear and tear throughout. A Victorian silver and embossed four piece tea set comprising teapot, hot water jug, twin-handled sugar basin and cream jug (William Hunter, London 1864), approx 76.6 oz total, housed in an oak fitted case bearing label to interior "Mappin & Webb No. 76, 77 and 78 Oxford Street W London ...." and brass plaque to top inscribed "Jane W Henry 6th October 1871" CONDITION REPORTS Box in used condition with many scratches, dents, shrinkage betwen sections, felt to interior worn. Tea set in good condition though in need of a good clean. Ivory beads to the two larger pieces, all with various discolouration and cracks - see images for further detail. The box shows significant signs of wear and tear, scratches, scuffs, marks, cho]ips, signs of warping etc throughout. All over considerable wear and tear, the paper label to the inside is somewhat tatty, has some grey marks.v The hot water pot has light scratches throughout to the body, the ivory rings are both cracked with splits. Slight shallow dents. Teapot has slight scratches throughout to the body. The teapot has light scratches throughout to the body. Lid is slightly wobbly. Some dents including one to the top section, some small dents underneath. Cracks and splits to the ivory finials. A large dent to the handle. Teapot is very wobbly when on a flat surface. The sugar bowl has some damage to one handle which is bent slightly out of alignment and shape. Some various knocks and dents to it also. All over various light scratches. Some small dents to the bottom of the basin and some wear to the gilt interior. Wobbles slightly when upon a flat surface. The cream jug has light scratches throughout. Some shallow dents to the body, both back feet have the appearance of being pushed up into the body. General small signs of wear and tear and some wear to the gilt interior. There is also a dent to the front of the cream jug. All silver items have general signs of wear and tear including surface scratches, small minor dents etc. There is one compartment in the box which is empty - this was possibly for a tea caddy but is no longer present. There is no key for the box - see extra images on line

Teapot with hinged lid, acanthus leaf two handled sugar basin, and single handled milk jug, pie crust borders, silver gilt interiors, length of teapot 29cm, hallmarks for London, 1816, height 14cm, gross weight 41.25 ozt. Provenance: Diary entry believed to be about the Ship Captain, Jos. Bushby, from 'The Carlisle Patriot' dated 1819: On Thursday last, was launched from the yard of Mesrs. [sic] KELSICK, WOOD, & Co. a fine new copper-bottomed brig, called the John Syme, burthen 285 tons, built for Capt. Jos. BUSHBY, who has been very successful in the Carricks, of Port Carlisle. Notwithstanding the wetness of the day, an immense number of persons were present to witness the launch. Digitized information from the Montreal Gazette listing arrivals at the Port of Quebec shows a 'brig Carricks' arriving on May 31st from Liverpool after a 41-day voyage, mastered by 'Bushby.'
