A VICTORIAN ELECTROPLATED COPPER ELECTROTYPE ~TEMPERANCE~ BASIN, PROBABLY ELKINGTON & CO., LONDON, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY after the basin by Francois Briot (1545-1620), circular, ovolo rim, the central medallion depicting Temperance surrounded by a band with cartouches of the four classical elements with herms and strapwork between, the outer border with eight cartouches of Minerva and the Liberal Arts between further strapwork 45cm diameter The Temperance Basin is one of the most copied and adapted pieces from the Renaissance period (Victoria and Albert Museum No.2063-1855): an Elkington & Co. parcel-gilt-silver version, known as the Venus Rosewater Basin, is especially renowned when held aloft annually by the Wimbledon Ladies Singles champion.
