A George III silver oval sugar basin and cream jug, maker's marks worn (A..?), London 1804, with threaded rims and handles, engraved with a shoulder band of a ribbon meander with fern sprays, engraved with an armorial and two crests, the sugar 19cm (7in) long, 361g (11.6 oz)The arms and crests of GORE-BOOTH, Baronets of Artarman co. Sligo. The assay date of 1804 directs us to Sir Robert Newcomen Gore (1752-1814) the 3rd Baronet, who at his marriage in 1804 to Hannah Irwin adopted by royal licence the name GORE-BOOTH. The motto: IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (Under this sign thou shalt conquer) Sir Robert Newcomen GORE-BOOTH (1752-1814), the 3rd Baronet, was born at Bath, Somerset the second surviving son of Booth GORE senior (1712-1773), the first Baronet of Artarman co. Sligo, created 1760, by Emily NEWCOMEN (1716-1778) of Carlow Ireland, who married in 1743. The third Baronet married in 1804 Hannah IRWIN (1781-1868) daughter of Henry IRWIN. He succeeded to the Baronetcy at the death of his older brother Booth GORE (1744-1804), the 2nd Baronet, who was a bachelor. A pair of black painted cast iron planters in late 18th Century style, each with circular basket top raised on baluster columns and splayed tripod legs terminating in paw feet in the Herculaneum manner, 85cm high, 79cm diameter (2)Condition Report: The tops are possibly associated.The later painted finish is quite worn to the tops, particularly bottom rim where there is also some light coloured and brown surface oxidisation. To one area this has extended to the underside of the basin, where there is some peeling. Some chipping of the paint to the bases. 100 – 300 AD. Gandharan. A rare Gandharan yellowish-grey schist panel depicting a drunken Hercules embracing a female companion. Both individuals are depicted with their richly-draped clothing falling away to reveal their naked bodies, and another figure can be seen to the right of the female companion, clutching at her gown as it falls. The figures are framed by a border of grapes and leaves, a symbol of drunkenness and the god Dionysus. The Greek hero Herakles/Hercules is famous for his acts of penance known as the Twelve Labours, but also for his uproarious drunkenness. This is a fantastic representation of a classical motif in the oriental style. Gandhara was an ancient region in the Peshawar basin in the north-west of the ancient Indian subcontinent. C. 1526 - 1857 AD. Mughal Empire. An iron knuckleduster comprising rectangular open grip with guard. A long wedge-shaped blade projects from one short end of the grip while a shorter spike extends from the other shorter end; three further small spikes protrude from one of the long ends of the grip. The short sides of the grip are decorated with gilding with incised geometric motifs and incised chevrons can also be observed on the iron of the main blade. The Mughal Empire was an early-modern empire in South Asia stretching from the Indus basin to northern Afghanistan, Kashmir, the highlands of Assam and Bangladesh to the Deccan plateau in south India. During its expansion the Mughal military used a variety of weapons including swords, spears, bows and arrows, cannons, muskets and flintlock blunderbusses as well as knuckledusters like this example. His finely modelled moustache and the prominent urna decorating his forehead underline his seriousness, as does his elaborate headpiece. A seated Buddha stucco buddha with flowing robes which fall off the shoulder, round face, thin lips, broad nose, half closed eyes and carefully modelled, wavy hair, culminating in an usnisha. His hands are held in front of him. The back of the right hand rests on the upturned palm of the other with the tips of the thumbs lightly touching. In this gesture, known as the Dhyani, the top hand symbolizes enlightenment; the bottom hand, the world of appearances. Accordingly, this arrangement suggests the supremacy of the enlightened mind. 300 – 500 AD. Gandharan stucco halo. This discoid halo would originally have been part of a large Gandharan statue. In its present condition, it comprises a red border enclosing a reddish-brown rondel; two figures stand at either side of the rondel, so as to flank either side of the head of the halo’s original wearer. The figures, both with their own halos and both wearing red robes, each have one raised hand, with the palm facing outwards and the fingers upwards and hold their other arm close to the body.
