A Georgian silver chalice decorated with oak leaves and acorns 'Presented by Lieut. Colonel Robt. Pilkington of the Corps of Royal Engineers to Mr William Baugh Civil Engineer in testimony of the assistance afforded by his assiduity and ability at the destruction of the Basin at Flushing in the year 1809' London 1812 Solomon Hougham, 16cm high Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Pilkington was assigned to the Walcheren expedition in 1809, with the objective of destroying the French Fleet in Flushing, thereby assisting the Austrian allies. It was one of the most disastrous campaigns for British Forces during the Napoleonic Wars, despite sending a force of 39,000 men (a larger number than for the Peninsular Campaign). The British captured Flushing with little fighting but in vain as the French had already moved their fleet on to Antwerp and the Austrians had surrendered to the French days before the campaign began. British Forces stayed in Flushing for four and half months before leaving in December 1809. During that time only 106 died in combat but a further 4,066 died of disease in Walcheren. Many who survived remained on the sick list for many years. On the evacuation of Walcheren the British Government ordered "the demolition of the sea-defences and Basin of Flushing". Nearly 400 civilian 'navigators' and engineers were sent from England and placed under the officers of the Royal Engineers. Little is known about William Baugh, but it is thought he may have been a Shropshire engineer who was a contractor to the London Docks and Ramsgate Harbour.

A RARE SET OF SIX GEORGE I MAHOGANY FRAME CHAIRS POSSIBLY IRISH, the slightly swept backs with curved scroll crest rails carved with acanthus leaves above pierced vase shape splats, the drop in seats upholstered in embroidered silk on deep frames, with bow fronts and shaped backs, the rails carved with central scallops and flanking acanthus leaves, raised on cabriole legs finely carved with leaves and scrolls, the claw and ball feet unusually pierced to emphasise the claw grip. These chairs have an extremely rare feature of pierced web claw feet. This feature is normally associated with American furniture of the period. However, Roladn Horst's article 'Irish Influences on Cabinet Making in Virginia's Rappahannock River Basin (see C. Beckerdite (ed)), American Furniture 1957' shows that many Irish cabinet makers emigrated to the towns and rural districts of the coastal plain during the second and third quarter of the 18th Century. This led to Irish features becoming part of the American cabinet making tradition.Christie's sold a pair of similar chairs in 1998 with pierced claw feet, described as being possibly Irish and a set of six walnut chairs with pierced claw feet were sold by Sothebey's London, 4th May 1991, lot 51, the property of Dame Violet Willis.
