A LARGE INCISED TINNED COPPER BASIN WITH ELABORATE VEGETAL MOTIFS Possibly Mamluk Syria, late 15th - early 16th centuryOf deep cylindrical shape with protruding, rounded shoulders, and a sloping, everted rim at the top, resting on a plain circular base, the shape reminiscent of Mamluk brass drums, the exterior profusely engraved with typical Mamluk metalwork decorative motifs laid out in three main overlapping horizontal registers, the lowest by the base with epigraphic cartouches on cross-hatched ground intertwined with Y-shaped gridwork roundels and oval cartouches with scrolling vegetal meanderings, the middle section with an elegant frieze of lobed arches in-filled with stylised lampstands spraying arabesque-like split palmette scrolls, and the upper register reminiscent of the one on the base but much more elaborate and larger in size, encased within braided knotwork bands and rosette roundels, the interior of the rim with two overlapping geometric fretwork bands, 31cm diam. and 17.5cm high. 31cm diam. and 17.5cm high Qty: 1
* NORMAN EDGAR RGI (SCOTTISH 1948 - 2022), BASIN AT HONFLEUR oil on canvas, signed, titled versoframed and under glassimage size 75cm x 92cm, overall size 91cm x 108cm Note: Norman Edgar studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1966 to 70 and went on to teach there until 1990, when he left in order to paint full-time. He was a landscape and portrait painter, working in the Colourist tradition. A member of the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, he showed work regularly in the annual Royal Scottish Academy exhibitions. He had long been a resident of Gourock on the south bank of the River Clyde and marine activities feature prominently in his work. He was also (and still is) widely regarded to be one of Scotland's leading still life painters.

Lot 29 on 21 March 1774 was 'two cut decanters (enamel'd) mosaick work very rich...', and lot 37 on 22 March 1774 was 'two glass decanters cut enamel'd mosaic very rich...'. Several cut glass wares from the atelier of James Giles gilded in a 'mosaic' pattern are known. A pair of green cruet bottles and a cream basin are illustrated by Gerald Coke, In Search of James Giles 1718-1780 (1983), p.243, pl.71. The cream basin is also illustrated by Stephen Hanscombe, James Giles China and Glass Painter (2005), no.128, together with a pair of blue cruet bottles and three scent bottles. A decanter of similar form in blue glass is illustrated by Andy McConnell (2018, p.117, no.13 together with an example of 'sugarloaf' form in opaque white glass, no.14, which was sold by Bonhams on 1 May 2013, lot 57. Pair of Wedgwood transferware oval meat plates, Chinese landscape scenes, 36cm, an Abbey transferware comport; Copeland Spode Italian sugar basin; and two transferware sauce tureens; together with a Minton Ironstone tureen.Condition report:Both meat plates are in good condition with the usually expected surface wear, cheese stand has a large chip to the foot and some heaving staining to the top, Spode sugar bowl is good, one sauce tureen cracked, the other crazed, chipped and stained, Minton serving dish has a couple of very small rim chips otherwise good.
