Lot 936

Full title: An Italian finely engraved brass dish with mythological scenes and grotesques, Venice, 16th C.Description:Dia.: 46 cm - H.: 5,5 cm Ref.: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Accession number M.38-1946, for another example. (External link available on rm-auctions.com) The catalogue entry states: In Venice, the production of brass dishes flourished in the first half of the 16th century. They were very elaborately decorated but not with traditional European linear ornamentation. Venice, during this period, traded and fought extensively with the Turkish and Arab empires which bordered the Mediterranean basin. Thus Venetian merchants brought back to the city Near Eastern craftsmen and goods that had an immediate influence on the indigenous population, and eventually the rest of Europe. The Venetian Muslim community produced many splendid damascened brass vessels, some of which are signed in Arabic by their makers. The decoration was more extensive, often covering the entire surface of an object. The arabesque pattern, base on a stylised plant with a winding stem, was studied and copied by contemporary Italian artists. By the middle of the 16th century, the arabesque as a form of ornament was beginning to influence craftsmen all over Europe, and became incorporated into the development of European ornamental design, until the decline of the Rococo in the late 18th century. The local craftsmen adopted the deep, bold engraving characterising their Islamic prototypes but only very occasionally used the silver inlay which was a speciality of the Saracen artists. Other subject matter incorporated into the decoration of these dishes by local, as opposed to Saracenic craftsmen, was characteristic of the late Renaissance: flowers, busts, erotic scenes, grotesques, sirens, birds, battle scenes, hunting scenes, triumphal processions and incidents taken from mythology. There is often a coat of arms in the centre which implies that many of the clients were members of the aristocracy.Condition reports:Condition reports (unless otherwise specified above):Please contact us on info@rm-auctions.com to request a condition report. Lot 64

A LARGE PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A BACTRIAN CAMEL, TANG DYNASTY 唐代彩繪駱駝俑China, 618-907. Well modeled standing foursquare, the long neck arched with the head thrown back, the mouth agape and nostrils flared, the body with simulated tufted hair at the head, neck, humps, and upper legs, the limbs and neck neatly incised.Provenance: From the private collection of Dr. Rudolf Leopold, and thence by descent. Dr. Rudolf Leopold (1925-2010) was an Austrian physician and important collector of art. He was born in Vienna and started actively collecting in the mid-1950s, with an early and major focus being works by Egon Schiele, whose paintings were available inexpensively at the time. Leopold acquired a catalog of Schiele's work in 1950 and became enamored with the artist's work, despite the fact that he was distinctly out of fashion. Pieces that he bought for little money would later be worth millions. Other Austrian artists he collected included Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka. A substantial part of his collection, numbering around 5,000 works of art, was purchased by the Republic of Austria and used as the foundation to create the Leopold Museum, of which the collector was made a director for life. Dr. Rudolf Leopold was also a passionate collector of Chinese works of art.Condition: Some repair, filling, and touchups as generally expected from authentic Tang dynasty excavations. Losses, fissures, firing cracks, and encrustations, remnants of pigments. Natural wear and weathering overall.Weight: 34 kgDimensions: Height 90 cm From the 6th century onwards and throughout the entire Tang dynasty, the Bactrian camel frequently appears among the tomb figures of China. Imported from the Tarim Basin, eastern Turkestan, and Mongolia, it was an essential means of transporting merchants and cargo along the Silk Road into China. The species was highly regarded by the Tang emperors who established dedicated offices to oversee the imperial camel herd. Referred to as the ships of the desert, camels endured hot temperatures and were the essential method of transport for merchants wishing to conduct trade with the oasis cities of Central Asia, such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Isfahan, along the trading routes of the ancient Silk Road.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 29 March 2022, lot 548Price: USD 13,860 or approx. A RARE WHITE MARBLE CARVING OF A PHALLUS, WESTERN HAN DYNASTY 西漢漢白玉玉勢China, 206 BC-8 AD. The realistically carved elongated phallus is decorated with rings along the shaft and with a cross-hatched decorative band at the base. The base has a domed recess inside that is pierced horizontally for suspension. This recess has a second aperture that extends to the tip of the phallus.Provenance: Bonhams, Hong Kong, December 16th, 2022, lot 351. Note that Bonham's experts originally dated this lot to the Tang dynasty.Condition: Good condition commensurate with age. Signs of wear, weathering, and erosion. Minor nicks and losses. Soil encrustations overall, issuing from an extended period of burial. These encrustations cannot be easily removed, and they have left distinct marks to the mineral. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into hairline cracks. Fine, naturally grown golden-brown patina overall.Weight: 431.7 g Dimensions: Length 18.9 cm Expert's note: Similar to the few known phallus sculptures from ancient China, the heavy encrustation from extensive burial is evidence of its (eventual) use as a grave good. The elaborate carving with great attention to detail and the two apertures, one for suspension and one for added realism, suggest the elite status of the person with which this was buried. Phallic objects carved from stone, or cast from metal or terracotta, are common subjects of any major ancient culture. Throughout time, the phallus was seen as an emblem of life and procreation. Not only did it have the power to induce fertility, but it also had an equally important role as an auspicious emblem which would ward off diseases. The practice of castration and the employment of court eunuchs, likely established in China during the Sui dynasty, added a secondary role of model phalli: the restoration of manhood after death (court eunuchs would be buried with their detached genitalia). However, this multifaceted subject remains somewhat of a taboo, which has contributed to relatively scarce publications about ancient Chinese erotic sculpture.Phalluses of various materials, believed to be associated with fertility rites, have been made in various prehistoric cultures in the Yellow River basin. Later in the Shang dynasty, when pictographic language emerged, the character zu (ancestor) closely resembled the male sexual organ, indicating the significance of the male role in ancient Chinese ancestry.Literature comparison: Compare two similar bronze phallus excavated from a tomb in the Dayun Mountain, Xuyi, Jiangsu, dated to the Western Han dynasty, in the Nanjin Museum, included in the exhibition Tomb Treasures: New Discoveries from China's Han Dynasty, Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, 17 February-28 May 2017. Compare two bronze V-shaped double-phalli, excavated in the tomb of Prince Zhongshan (Liu Sheng), dated to the Han dynasty, published in Mancheng Han mu Fajue Baogao (Excavation Report of the Han Dynasty tomb at Mancheng), Beijing, 1980, vol. 1, pp. 100. The former was unearthed together with a pair of matching stone pebbles, illustrated ibid., vol. 2, pl. LXI, fig. 2.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 29 April 2022, lot 3670 Estimate: HKD 140,000 or approx. Lot 300

A Royal Worcester Blush Ivory teaset, 1908Each piece painted with pairs of birds including chaffinches, blue tits, greenfinches, swallows, perched on branches, on a blush ivory ground, comprising eleven tea plates, twelve tea cup with C scroll handle, twelve saucers, two cake plates and a slop basin, pattern number 8208, puce printed marks date code for 1908 (38)Footnotes:The painting is in the style of the Grainger factory which was finally absorbed into the Royal Worcester family in 1904-5. By the time this set was made, senior artists were now allowed to sign their work, and James Stinton was promoted to join his brother as one of the top painters, painting little else but pheasants. He also became a teacher of other bird artists.Charlie Baldwyn had been the primary painter of real or garden birds, but his time was now taken up churning out flying swan vases so garden birds were taken on by new youngster- William Powell. Meanwhile, Walter Powell (no relation) painted larger bird subjects in the separate Hadley department, and George Johnson painted old-fashioned Fancy birds on scale blue grounds. This set shows the influence of James and John Stinton but they would have signed somewhere. We would suggest a likely candidate would be William Powell out of the junior names available. He was still just finishing his apprenticeship in 1907/08 and would not have been allowed to sign his name. We are grateful to John Sandon for his help in cataloguing this lot.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 573

AN IMPORTANT GROUP OF LIMOGES CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL GEMELLIONS FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION. Limoges patinated gilt-copper and polychrome champlevé enamel gemellion, circa 1200-1250, of shallow circular form, decorated with the striped shield-shaped coat-of-arms of Provence, reserved on a scroll pattern within a circular cartouche, within an interlocking quatrefoil border depicting four pairs of figures standing wearing long robes, flanked by scrollwork, the rim pierced with five small apertures and with gilt beast spout to underside, engraved with a central flowerhead within lappet border to reverse, 23.7cm wide (including spout) ProvenanceBy repute Hever Castle, Kent, and thence by descent to the present owner. Gemellions are shallow bowls that were used for the washing of hands, in both a religious setting by priests at an altar and in a secular setting at meal times in wealthy medieval households. They frequently came in pairs, as their Latin name 'Gemellus', meaning twin would suggest. The ceremony of hand washing involved the use of a shallow hand basin and a pouring vessel, the latter in the form of a shallow dish-shaped spouted vessel, as with the present example.  Decorated in colourful enamels and gilding these dishes have a ‘jewel’ like appearance and they frequently combine Gothic figures, animals and heraldic devices.  The present example includes delicately executed figures at the border which are comparable to the figural roundels seen on the Coffret of Saint Louis (in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York), see M. Gauthier, B. Barriere et. al., Enamels of Limoges 1100-1350, The Metropolitan Museum, New York, 1996, Cat. no. 123, pp. 360-363.  A similar heraldic device can be seen at the centre of several documented gemellions, including the spouted example in the MET, see Ibid., Cat. no. 131 and the example in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, accession no. 6983-1860. Condition Report With red, blue, white, yellow and green enamel still visible.  Traces of gilding still visible to the pairs of figures and to the beast head spout..With some typical wear and losses to enamel commensurate with age. With small hole pierced to rim, there is some slight misshaping to the rim.
