The Model Railway System of Josué Droz, 1925-35Completely made by hand: An absolutely unique masterpiece of Swiss precision engineering. and a spectacular work of a lifetime! For centuries, La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Swiss Neuchâtel Jura has been regarded as an instrument-making center of excellence, producing precision engineering, clocks, toys and musical boxes of the highest quality, some of which are now exhibited in the famous horology museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The La Chaux-de-Fonds district is also the birthplace of the renowned horologist Pierre Jaquet-Droz, whose three `androids` can be seen in nearby Neuchâtel. It is not by chance, then, that the name of the maker of this unique model railway system now offered for sale, is Josué Droz, a citizen of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Although we do not know the precise family connection between the two Droz engineers, the spirit of the master is evident in this remarkable model railway! Born in 1895, Josué Droz began work on the construction of his scale model railway station installation modeled on the SBB - Schweizer Bundesbahn (Swiss Federal Railways) - when he was thirty. As a trained cabinet maker, he was familiar with precision modeling and devoted every free minute of his time to his meticulously-planned master work. It was not completed until 1936, eleven years and an unbelievable 18,000 man hours later. His complete railway station system, faithful to the original in even the smallest detail, remains absolutely unique throughout the world, surpassing the finest commercial brands in its precision and quality. Droz designed and built the system himself, sometimes in consultation with well-known Swiss engineers and specialists. The system is designed to a scale of 1:30 (48 mm gauge), thoroughly thought out and executed with outstanding skill and care, and lacks absolutely nothing when it comes to originality and accuracy of detail. Its overall size is an impressive 6 x 16 meters (96 sq. meters/approx. 1,000 sq feet)! In November 1936, whilst the effects of the world recession were still being felt, the complete system was exhibited for fourteen days by the municipal Documentation Office for Trade and Engineering, the first and only time that it has been seen by the public, in the old Apollo Cinema Theatre in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Since that time, the complete system has rested in sturdy custom-built upholstered wooden boxes, protected from humidity and cold, in the attic of its creator in No. 17 Rue de la Réformation, La Chaux-de-Fonds, until it was discovered by ATB and made known to the public. This important model railway represents the golden age ideal of a truly public transportation system which transformed the world during the first part of the 20th century. Words are not enough to describe the precision, accuracy, perseverance and patience, the great talent, which Josué Droz devoted to creating his masterpiece. Colonial United States and Canada - Great Lakes (Le Canada, ou Nouvelle France, &c.), Sanson, Paris, 1656. 21.5 x 15.8”. (HC) This is one of the most influential seventeenth century maps of the French and English colonies in North America. It concentrates on the region of greatest French interest with the boundary lines reflecting the French version of territorial boundaries. Sanson based the map primarily on Jesuit sources, retaining Champlain`s basic cartographic model for the northern parts of Canada. He added some nomenclature of James, Foxe, and Button and retained the earlier concept of Button`s Northwest Passage, in the southwest corner of the bay. The most important aspect of the map is the first appearance of L. Erie, ou du Chat as a recognizable lake. This delineation influenced the cartography of the region for over 100 years and was not superceded until Delisle`s Carte du Canada in 1703. The entire Great Lakes basin and the St. Lawrence River are shown in great detail. Lake Superior and Michigan (Lac du Puans) are left open-end to the west. Other geographical improvements introduced with this map include a more detailed Hudson Bay, the introduction of Long Island, and the correct position of New Amsterdam. Engraved by Jan van Somer. Ref: Burden no.318; Kershaw no.133; Schwartz & Ehrenberg no.62; Pastoureau, Sanson V [86]. Original outline color on watermarked paper with light toning along centerfold and a printer`s crease at bottom left. There is an extraneous crease at left and two unobtrusive manuscript ink marks at top left. Remnants of paper hinge tape on verso. (+B)

Lot 180

Central United States (Louisiana), Ehrmann, Schilderung von Louisiana, Weimar, [1804]. 6.6 x 8.5”. (HC) An interesting little map showing the Mississippi basin. The United States are labeled Freye Staaten with the frontier showing a huge Indiana, an incompletely formed Kentucki, and Georgia taking in all the region to the Mississippi, including the area of Tennessee. Locates many Indian villages as well as early western forts. Ref: Phillips (Maps) p. 371. Issued folding with light toning in blank margins. (A)

Western United States (Map of Upper California by the U.S.Ex.Ex. and Best Authorities 1841), Wilkes, Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition, Washington D.C., 1841. 11.5 x 8.3”. (HC) This crisply drawn map covers all the American West south of 42 N. and west of the Rocky (Anahuac) Mountains, with by far the greatest detail in California. The cartography is distinctly pre-Fremont. The Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys combine to form the large Buenaventure Valley with the Rio San Buenaventura in the area of today`s Salinas River. The map pre-dates the discovery of gold by several years, but in the vicinity of Sutter`s mill where the settlement of New Helvetica is located. Along the coast the mission towns are named, but there is no mention here of Los Angeles even though it was a self-sustaining farming community as early as 1821. The Colorado River is shown trending in an oddly straight course giving no credit to the Grand Canyon. The Great Basin, called the Great Sandy Plain, is crossed by Smith`s Track and is bounded east and west by the Colorado Range and the California Range. The Great Salt Lake is Youta Lake and the Salt River is called the Inconstant R. Interesting notes explain the unknown qualities of the land and another describe the Indians as "the most miserable objects in creation," an unfortunate depiction. Ref: Wheat (TMW) no.458; Wheat (Gold) 23. Light offsetting with slightly uneven toning and an archivally repaired tear in top blank margin, far from map image. (+B)

Pensacola, Florida ([Lot of 2] Plan de la Baye de Pansacola [and] Pensacola Harbour), ca. 1744-1833. x ”. (BW) A. Plan de la Baye de Pansacola, by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, from Charlevoix`s Histoire et Description de la Nouvelle France, dated 1744, (11" x 7.8"). An early chart of Pensacola Harbor, showing the locations of forts St. Charles and St. Rose, as well as soundings and anchorages. This example was engraved from maps and charts brought back to Paris by Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761), a Jesuit historian who explored the Great Lakes, and the Mississippi River Basin from 1721-22. He was shipwrecked near Pensacola on his way to New Orleans. His detailed notes and scientific observations enlivened the memoir on the explorations, Histoire et Description de la Nouvelle France. The map was engraved by Dheulland in Paris under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin and published in 1744. Condition: Light offsetting with a binding trim at lower right with minute loss of neatline. Issued folding. (B+) B. Pensacola Harbour, by Edmund Blunt, circa 1833, (8" x 10"). Surveyed by Major Kearney, this chart showing numerous soundings in the Harbor, as well as a tiny Pensacola and Rosa Island. Condition: There are a few minor extraneous creases and a few tiny spots. Issued folding. (B+) See description. ()

Southwestern United States, Texas and Mexico (Central America II. Including Texas, California and the Northern States of Mexico), SDUK Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, London, 1842. 15.5 x 12.3”. (BW) This excellent map covers the southwestern United States just a few years before Mexico lost the region in the Mexican-American War. Texas is shown as an Independent Republic with its panhandle extending well north up to Spanish Peaks. Excellent detail throughout Texas shows many towns and villages, roads and trails, topography, and watershed. All of the Southwest and California are here noted as "Generally called Upper California". Large swamps and lakes in the Great Basin drain through a complex R. Buenaventura system. The map displays excellent detail throughout and includes many frontier forts, Indian tribes, etc. There are interesting notations; a Supposed Petrified Forest in the western part of Texas, Supposed residence of the Aztecs in 12th century (Humboldt ) in the Moquis (Hopi) region of present-day Arizona. Published by Chapman and Hall, engraved by J. & C. Walker. Dated 15 Oct. 1842. Ref: Wheat [TMW] no.460. Lightly toned along sheet edges with a minor crease in bottom right corner. (A)

Southwestern United States, Texas & Mexico (Vereinigte Staaten von Nord-America: Californien, Texas und die Territorien New Mexico u. Utah…), Meyer, Meyer`s Zeitungs Groschen Atlas, Hildburghausen, 1852. 11 x 9”. (HC) This terrific map covers the western U.S. and northern Mexico. Of special interest is a huge California Gold Region, fully colored in yellow, that stretches from about Merced north to Shasta in Northern California. Part of the southwest and California are named Upper California and the Baja is Lower California. Lake Tahoe is here called Mountain Lake, and the Great Basin is called the Great Sandy Plain. The Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake are misshapen but correctly located. Salt Lake City (here Mormon City) is incorrectly located at the southern tip of the Great Salt Lake. New Mexico is oddly shaped and contains several towns that properly belong in Mexico. There are also many interesting place names in Texas including Austin`s Grant, Houston, and S. Anfelipe de Austin. The map is filled with place names, Indian tribes and wagon roads. Ref: cf. Wheat (Gold) no. 217 There are a few faint spots in the image, else fine. (A)

Paulo, Buenos Ayres, Corduba, Medoca, Arica, Potosi and Cusco. A large decorative title cartouche incorporates the distance scales, while a smaller cartouche features an armillary sphere. A fine, large compass rose with fleur-de-lys also adorns the sheet. Dutch text on verso. Old color and wide margins with light damp stains that just enter map border at bottom & a couple tiny tears in wide original margins, none affecting the map. (+B)

Western South America (Map of the Valley of the Amazon to Accompany Lt. Herndon`s Report), Herndon, Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon…, Washington D.C., ca. 1853. 24 x 18”. (PC) This is one of three maps that accompanied Herndon`s report, Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon. In 1851, Lieutenant Herndon was commissioned to lead the first American expedition of the Valley of the Amazon, "to explore the Amazon, to sound its streams and to report as to their navigability." The exploration and resulting report were made under the direction of the U.S. Navy Department. Herndon journeyed through parts of Peru, Bolivia and Brazil for nearly a year and went on to become the captain of the ill-fated Central America, which sank in 1857 with a load of gold and newly minted gold coin from the Carson City mint. The gold, valued at more than a billion dollars, was recovered in a deep water project completed in 1989. This seldom seen map details the basin and valley of the Amazon River. The range extends from the Pacific in Peru and Ecuador to the Atlantic and the mouth of the Amazon at the I. Marajo. The watershed is shown in great detail and the tracks of both Herndon and Lt. Lardner Gibbon, who was ordered to explore a different area of the Amazon, are also depicted. At top is a view of a Vertical Section of Route from Callao to Para. Drawn by H.C. Elliot. The map folds into the original covers, titled Herndon`s Valley of the Amazon Maps. Part 1. Covers are brown cloth-covered boards, with decorative embossing and gilt title. Map of the Rivers Huallaga, Ucayali & Amazon… was originally included in the covers, but has been removed. Folding, as issued, with uneven toning, and still attached to original covers. There are several fold separations, with very small areas of loss in blank areas of map image at two fold intersections. Covers are faded in areas with spots on front cover and a 1" tear along spine.
