Lot 14

Abbey RoadA 'Belisha Beacon' Pedestrian Post From The Abbey Road Crossing, 2010'sthe 11 1/2-inch amber-coloured plastic beacon atop an aluminium pole painted black, with white stripes applied at regular intervals, bearing numerous local and guerrilla advertising stickers, the pole lacking side cover and electrical internals, with remains of concrete to the 7-inch wide base 300cm (118in) high overallFootnotes:ProvenanceAcquired by the current owner directly from the removals firm tasked with deinstalling and replacing the beacons at the Abbey Road crossing, 2018Arguably the most famous and recognisable road crossing in the world, the Abbey Road zebra crossing was the site of the album cover for The Beatles' Abbey Road album, shot by Iain Macmillan in 1969 (the outtakes for which are also offered in the present auction). While the location of the crossing has remained the same since 1969, the crossing's beacons and white road markings are periodically cleaned, updated and replaced to conform to local road and safety laws. The most recent work to date is the re-painting of the crossing's lines in March 2020. Though it may not have been present in 1969 for the Beatles cover shoot, this beacon has featured in the memory and photos of thousands of Beatles fans who have made the pilgrimage to the site. This pedestrian crossing beacon was originally situated at the famous crossing on Abbey Road, on the far side of the road from Abbey Road Studios. The crossing's other beacon at the time, on the same side of the road as Abbey Road Studios, had been damaged in a car accident earlier in 2018 and was subsequently removed. Due to local road improvement schemes the other, intact beacon - the present Lot - also had to be replaced with a matching up-to-date model. It was therefore deinstalled from Abbey Road in late 2018, but remains an enduring part in the history of the crossing. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
